39 Steps Trapped in the Heather

In the book [film versions disregarded] Hannay sees the biplane circling overhead and because there is zero cover he gives up and allows himself to be spotted. This is so unlike Hannay. What else could he have done? For example, he could have put his coat over his head and drawn in his arms and legs to present a confusing image to the spotter in the plane who would be a couple of hundred feet up. Any other
ideas? The incident with the roadman that comes after is one of my favourites, closely followed by his interview in the villa with the spies who nearly convince Hannay they are genuine.
I have read the book recently and find it as compelling as I did when I first read it as a boy, a very long time go. I suppose that link with my youth is part of the attraction. I would love to hear why other people are so drawn to it.
