Arthur is a capybarra. Aardvarks have a long snout, and Arthur does not have a love nose, so therefore he is not and Aardvark. Look up a picture of the two types of animals and compare them to Arthur and you will see.

He used to have a long nose in the books but they shortened it for some reason, however, he remains an aardvark :0)
You're right..he does look much more like a capybara! I've accepted "aardvark" since I was a little kid because it was the author's answer, and we all figured it was sort of a joke that he didn't really look like one. But I wonder if the creators are aware that they've actually drawn a capybara. xD
I know that the "official" designation has always been aardvark,,,in the original "Arthur" illustrations. he actually was one. But unless he's a deformed aardvark, or the species is different in his world...the one we know and love is TRULY a capybara.

Arthur is an Aardvark.Or if you like an Ant eater.Sue Ellen is a cat.Buster and Molly are Bunny' s. Muffy and Francine are Monkeys.And Tommy and Timmy and Brain are Bears.
