Books to Read Question

Is 'A Catcher on The Rye' a good read?

I'm thinking about buying it, but I'm a bit hesitant as I don't really know any more than what is in the description. So do you or do you not recommend it.
Thank you!

Well, we had to read it for school last year. The friends and I were in the same English class (honors). Two of my friends absolutely LOVED it, but my other friend and I couldn't stand it in the slightest.

There is an excessive amount of cursing. I personally don't mind cursing, if in small amounts. But when it's every two words, it becomes meaningless and annoying. There is no clear motive as to what the character is trying to achieve. It is mainly about a teenage guy complaining, being stupid, complaining about the stupid things he does, doing more stupid things, and complaining more.

There is symbolism and stuff in there, but it didn't have much of a significant meaning behind it in my opinion. Yeah, I got the general idea of how he loves innocence, and how people become horrible once they lose their innocence, but it was just so... pointless.

I don't recommend it, but then again, two out of four of us loved it, so it depends on what you like.
