As rain sprinkled the black she-cat's fur, she
suppressed a small shiver and padded through
the doused undergrowth. The expansive trees
stretched high above her; almost as if they
could touch the moon that glowed dully in StarClan. Glancing around, all scent of prey was
disguised by the rainwater. Letting out an
irritated sigh, her gaze flicked from cat to cat; each one was emaciated and apparently starving.
"We're losing hope....our Clan is slowly dying." She mewed pensively to a dark tabby.
The tabby's green eyes flashed angrily; not at her, but the fact that she was right. He seemed appalled by the fact that their Clan was dying, and there was absolutely nothing they could do. His tone was barely audible when he finally meowed, "I can't let this happen. Blake is on his last life, and, he's sick!"
She could sense his exasperation. Then, in an entirely new mood, she piped up jauntily, "We can save the Clan! We can do it...." Then she
smiled sheepishly, realizing how impossible that really was. She felt totally moronic. Though rather dubious, she surveyed the tom's calm gaze and smiled warmly. He understood her.
"It's okay, Midnight," he purred, "everything will be okay."
The night sky was still murky when they returned. Midnight had never liked the evening patrol, but now as they returned, she was extremely grateful to be able to get some rest. Her brother, Thunder, would be going out on the dawn patrol with Blizzy, Bryce, and his mentor, Drake. Stretching her jaws in a wide yawn, she dropped into her nest and snuggled up warmly.
Something strange emitted from the darkness, making Midnight transfixed to her spot. The horrible stench of badger filled her nostrils, and a silvery berry-eyed beast launched at her. It's growl was raucous and it slashed her face, then leaning down to ravenously bite her shoulder. Pained seared through her, and she felt as if her shoulder blade has just cracked. Screeching, she flung away and smashed to the ground. Suddenly, her body began shattering into icy pieces, flying everywhere. "Wait!" She yowled, "I need you!"
"Midnight!" An irritated hiss awoke her.
"Hurr- what?" She leaned up tiredly, blinking sleep from her drowsy eyes.
"We're going hunting with Alice and Cleah. Be sure to eat before we leave!" Her mentor, Ravenflight, meowed.
She had always preferred to call Ravenflight Raven because of his black pelt. She couldn't help but always stare quizzically at him; his figure and markings resembled hers greatly.
Ravenflight smiled and stepped out of the den. As she peeked her way out of the den, the clearing was already active. Koja and Frost were sharing tongues, Butterscotch was returning with fresh-kill in her jaws, and Xavier greeted her warmly with a brush to her muzzle. Ever since Steel had been exiled, Butterscotch and Xavier have been spending more time together.
Midnight barely even missed her father, for he was cruel and she hated his imperiously sharp tone. Steel had once threatened to throw Thunder over the gorge into the waterfall when her brother had disobeyed him. That was when they were kits and had ventured far out of camp, looking for the rare Snow Crow. Midnight had wanted to bring it back as prey, to show off her skills. Though she was a very skilled hunter, even now she didn't think she would be able to pin down the swift Snow Crow.
Padding over to the fresh-kill pile, she chose a plump starling and sat down in her regular spot: below the Oak. Gulping down her meal, she licked her lips then trotted over to her mentor.
"Ready," She meowed, standing tall.
Ravenflight briskly nodded then called for Cleah with her apprentice. "We're ready!" He said as they bounded over.
Alice groaned, noticing that she would have to go hunting with Midnight(who she did not like at all).
Midnight smirked and flicked the young she-cat with her blue-tipped tail. "Fun, huh?" She teased, snickering.
Alice growled and hunched her shoulders, stomping angrily out of camp with the rest of the hunting patrol.
With a disgruntled laugh, Midnight padded out with the rest of them.
