"C'mon, Bones, what's up?"
Brennan stared out the window as Booth expertly made his way through traffic. He turned left and parked a few feet away from the yellow tape. Police cars and ambulances dotted the scene, lights flashing and reporters milling around. She got out of the car and headed over to where Zach and Hodgens were already waiting, Booth following behind her.
"Hello, Dr. Brennan," Zach greeted. Brennan nodded in reply.
"So what's up?" asked Booth. Hodgens looked up and replied, "There's a body tied to a stake on the roof. The victim was burned alive, the entrails cut out, and-" Booth raised his palm in a gesture for Hodgens to shut up. Brennan glanced at her partner and turned to her colleagues.
"What else, Hodgens?"
"Well, actually, I was only going to say that we were about ready to go up and check it out more. This way."
They went inside the building and accessed the stairway to the roof. Booth made it up there first, and had the unfortuante chance to get a very good look at the charred flesh and spilled intestines.
"Ugh!" he groaned, holding his nose and looking away. Hodgens came up behind him and teased, "Never thought the tough FBI agent would be so squeamish about a dead body!"
"Don't make me throw you off this roof," Booth growled in reply. He moved towards the corpse. Brennan was already taking photographs and examining the remains. She stood and peered closely at the skull. Something shiny was lodged in the jaw. A coin fell out as she forced open the mandibles. She bent down and picked it up, examining it closely in the sunlight. The others noticed and headed over to where she stood. Zach took it, turning it over in his hands. "It's got a picture of Columbus on the back," he stated. Brennan's eyes widened. She began to feel uneasy about this case.
But she said nothing. Instead she turned towards Hodgens. "I think we're done here. Have them bring the body to the lab. We'll meet you there." Hodgens nodded and, taking Zach with him, went off to find a body bag. Brennan started down the stairs and Booth followed suit. As they drove away, Brennan sat there very quietly. She thought about their friend who was a chef and former psychologist, Dr. Gordon Wyatt. He believed that she and Booth needed each other and no matter how unlikely it seemed, there was never a better match. Brennan, however, was dating another man, an FBI agent named James Sullivan. She believed they were very compatible. But last night she had told Sully what Gordon had said and he had become very angry. He had accused her of not truly caring about him and using him to make other men jealous, to win the heart of a different man. She had had many conflicting feelings and didn't know how to reply. He had walked out angrily and still hadn't called. She was beginning to think their relationship was over.
"Bones. Bones. BONES! Hey, Bones, are you even listening to me?" Booth demanded.
"Sure, I guess," Brennan replied half-heartedly.
"Yeah, right, Bones. Anyways, I wanted to know if you would like to go out for Chinese tonight. Say, sixish?"
She stared at him. "Are you asking me out on a date? Because if you are, I can't. I already have a boyfriend."
"No, Bones. It's just a friendly - wait, boyfriend?" Booth's heart sunk as he stared at the only woman he could ever truly love, but who still didn't know it.
"Booth, watch the road!" He swerved back into his lane. "Yes, Booth. Boyfriend. Except we fought last night and he hasn't returned any of my calls. I'm worried...Booth, what if he doesn't like me anymore?"
"Then he doesn't deserve you. Who is this guy anyways?" Although he felt slightly guilty for it, his hopes rose a bit. Perhaps this guy would stay out of the way.
"James Sullivan," Brennan said sadly.
Booth almost slammed the brakes on the middle of the highway. "Sully? As in Special Agent Sully? From the FBI? Why didn't you mention it earlier?"
"I don't know. I thought I would keep this private and not have it spread all throughout the Jeffersonian via Angela within a single hour."
Booth chuckled. "Yeah, I get it. So, what exactly did you fight about?"
"Nothing! It-it was nothing. Just...never mind."
"C'mon, Bones. Tell me!" he begged.
"No! It's none of your business!" Although it sort of was, in a way, considering it was about her and him together, she realized. But Brennan kept her mouth shut.
"All right, I see how it is."
The rest of the drive was very quiet.
