Spike went through all of that to get his soul back for Buffy, yes.

The writers have confirmed that Spike was really fighting to get his soul back in that scene. The implication that he was instead trying to get the chip removed was a red herring. But the red herring was a bit too effective and apparently tricked some viewers (myself included).
