Classic Literature Question

"The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain tells about life in the 'wild west' era of the South. What other classic books comment on this era?

At the Cowboy Fanclub, there's a forum:

about how classic literature (like "Huck Finn") portrays cowboys/the wild west.

I'd like to make an anthology - do writers like Tolstoy or Proust have anything to say on the subject, even a line or 'throw away' allusion? If you know one, PLEASE POST IT at the forum spot above and feel free to comment on any other post there.
