why didn't goku dated chi chi sooner

He promised her to marry her during their first encounter without knowing what really wedding means; in the manga, so in the original story without anime's fillers, Goku has never met Chichi again, till she has decided to participate to 23rd WMAT for find him, angry because he totally forgot her.
