Yes, the medals are based entirely on how others rate your content. Rate-able content includes any kind of link, such as videos, soapbox articles, images and the like. Enough people have to rate your content highly for you to "medal" in a spot. Note that picks and comments cannot be rated - they get props, but no ratings.

Although if I remember correctly, someone said that you can eventually get yourself the medal by adding enough stuff, but it'd take a mighty large effort :)
