I think he's a good basis for a promotional campaign, but I wouldn't want any mascot for the competition itself. With an official mascot, one would expect it to appear in the branding, including the club icon and banner. The problem with mascots is, people start to associate the product (that is, the competition) with the mascot, and that's problematic with a talent competition. We want people to enter the competition and vote for contestants, not buy a product.

That said, I have loved each of the images I've seen of Herb so far. Mostly I haven't seen them in other clubs, though.

Edit: I realize I didn't finish my thought in the first paragraph: Point me to another talent competition/show that has a mascot. I don't think the problems you'll have doing that come from the organizers of those events simple not thinking of the great idea, but rather it's because a mascot distracts from the message in the case of a contest.

Now, on the other hand, Fanpop could have a mascot...

im all for CONSTRUCTIVE criticism and constructive being the watchword. i dont think anyone here has a degree in party planning or visual arts- we go with what inspires us and this is what we have so far! i love that cinders made these suggestions...if you have more suggestions upload them and the judges can make a final pick with all the options.

Still, harold makes a valid point. I dunno. Herb evolved out of an idea germs sparked in a conversation. I think he's just a fun character.
