I think Garfield is similar to Peanuts in this sense. Charles Schulz retired not long before he died, and said that he wouldn't give the rights to anyone to continue the Peanuts comic strip when he was gone. But I certainly don't consider the strip to be "dead" because it is still very popular and loved by so many.

I expect the same will happen with Jim Davis, or at least I think that's what should happen. I don't think he should let anyone else continue the comic strip when he dies, but the fans will still remember and love all the existing comic strips. :)
