One of my hamster's cages was a roterstak and the tube broke and e got out. But when it came to Fudge we let him free range the living room, he ended up moving his bed to the back of the sofa. None of the other hamsters have ever escaped, we generally sellotaped the cages. The hamster I have now, Mina, runs around in her ball, and has a second cage for playing and shes aloud to run around my bed and desk. So she's never tried to escape.

You have to make sure you have an adequate cage though, I have a dwarf hamster so we had to make sure the bars were close together.
