The story begins in 2005 with Ted (Josh Radnor) as a single, 27-year-old architect living with his two best friends from college; Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segel), a law student, and Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan), a kindergarten teacher, who have been dating for almost nine years when Marshall proposes. Their engagement causes Ted to think about marriage and finding his soul mate, much to the disgust of his self-appointed best friend Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris) whom he met in a bathroom after a night of drinks. Barney is known as a womanizer with an unnamed corporate job. Ted begins his search for his perfect mate and meets an ambitious young reporter, Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders), whom he quickly falls in love with. Robin, however, doesn't want to rush into a relationship and the two decide to be friends. Future Ted reveals that Robin is not the mother after referring to her as his children's "Aunt Robin". Ted begins dating a baker, Victoria, whom he meets at a wedding, causing Robin to become jealous and realize she does have feelings for him. Victoria moves to Germany for a culinary fellowship, and she and Ted try a long-distance relationship. Once Ted learns Robin has feelings for him, he tells her that he has broken up with Victoria, even though he hasn't. They almost have sex, but Victoria calls and Robin answers by mistake. Ted and Victoria then break up and an angry Robin distances herself from Ted, but they eventually make up and decide to date. Meanwhile, Lily begins to wonder if she's missed any opportunities because of her relationship with Marshall, and decides to pursue an art fellowship in San Francisco, breaking up with Marshall in the process. The season ends with Ted coming back to the apartment, the morning after spending the night with Robin for the first time, to find Marshall sitting in the rain with Lily's engagement ring. SEASON TWO******* Ted continues to tell his kids the story of how he met their mother. However, by this point, they've become frustrated at the whole story taking too long, and try to ask him to skip ahead to their mother's meeting, as "I feel like you've been talking for, like, a year." Ted and Robin are now a couple; meanwhile, a heartbroken Marshall tries to continue his life without Lily. After he endures numerous emotional breakdowns, Marshall's friends step in, and Barney, using sly catch phrases and pick up lines, encourages Marshall to date again. Later, Lily returns to New York after realizing she is not meant to be an artist, and reunites with Marshall, and resume planning the wedding.Marshall and Barney make a "slap bet" on whether or not Robin was involved in "adult films". Barney loses the bet, when everyone discovers Robin was a Canadian teen pop star known as Robin Sparkles in the early 1990s, with a hit single "Let's Go To The Mall". For losing the bet, Marshall is permitted to slap Barney in the face five times as hard as he can at any time in the future of Marshall's choosing, which he does twice during this season. It is also revealed that Barney has a gay, black brother (Wayne Brady), and that he believes that Bob Barker is his father, unaware that his mother lied to him, and takes a trip to California to be a contestant on The Price is Right to meet Barker. At the end of the season, Marshall and Lilly get married. At their reception, Ted reveals to Barney that he and Robin have been broken up for some time because of their conflicting aspirations regarding marriage and children. They did not reveal the termination of their relationship to avoid drawing attention away from Lily and Marshall's wedding. The season ends with Barney excited at the prospect of Ted and himself being single guys on the town again, and ends the season with Barney saying, "This is going to be legen- wait for it.. SEASON 3************* Ted's kids realize that the events that lead up to the meeting of their mother is a long story, and so decide to be quiet until Ted himself can actually recount the day he met her. Throughout the season, Ted reveals details about her that he learned even before he met her. Barney begins the season by saying "-dary!", completing the phrase "Legendary!" from the final episode of season 2. So after season 2 ended and season 3 began, Robin returns from a trip to Argentina with her new boyfriend, Gael (Enrique Iglesias), and Ted must adjust to life as just her friend, while watching Robin and Gael fawning over each other. Marshall and Lily decide to move into their own home, falling in love with a place they can't afford. Robin learns of Lily's bad credit rating, caused by her compulsive shopping for designer brands, and forces Lily to tell Marshall. Despite this, they are able to finally secure their dream apartment, only to discover it's in a bad location and more poorly constructed than they thought (the floor is tilted). Barney is slapped for the third time on Thanksgiving, which Marshall dubs "Slapsgiving." Ted tells his children that he met their mother by recounting a story about her yellow umbrella. He finds the umbrella at a club and takes home after attending a St. Patrick's Day party (which Barney had forced him to attend) where his future wife was, although they did not meet. Ted attempts to woo Stella (Sarah Chalke), a dermatologist he sees to remove an embarrassing tattoo on his lower back. Stella warns Ted she will say no if he asks her out on a date. However, after ten sessions with her, he convinces her to go on a date with him. This culminates in a memorable "two-minute date", which incorporates small talk, dinner, a movie, coffee, two (really short) cab rides, and a goodnight kiss, all within two minutes. Robin has sex with Barney after he comforts her following a break-up, which is followed by Ted's disapproval and decision to stop being friends with Barney. Meanwhile, an unknown woman begins to sabotage Barney's attempts to hook up. His saboteur is revealed to be Abby (Britney Spears), Stella's receptionist, with a vendetta against him for not calling her after they had sex. In the season finale, after Ted and Barney get into separate car accidents and end up in the hospital, they renew their friendship. It is revealed that Barney has true feelings for Robin, while Ted proposes to Stella. SEASON 4************** Stella says "yes" to Ted's proposal. Robin takes a new job as a reporter in Japan, but quickly resigns, returning to New York to attend Ted's wedding, after realizing how much she misses her friends. Stella leaves Ted at the altar to get back together with Tony (Jason Jones), her ex-boyfriend and the father of her daughter. Barney struggles with his feelings for Robin and Lily becomes the first person to know about them. He then turns to her for advice on how to overcome these feelings, with little success. His company shifts him to the management team of a new acquisition, Goliath National Bank (GNB), where he is joined by Marshall, following a brief period of unemployment. Marshall and Lily move to their new apartment and debate over whether or not they're ready to have children. Robin becomes roommates with Ted and gets a job as an anchor for a 4 AM news show after Barney sends out her video resume. Ted and Robin decide to sleep together constantly so they won't fight over each other's bad co-living habits. Barney's feelings for Robin begin to become clearer at this point, that attempts to make them stop fighting to prevent this, taking out the garbage, buying many big bottles of milk, giving them stamps, etc., revealing to Ted his love for Robin. For Barney's sake and his own romantic relationship habits, Ted ends his sleeping arrangements with Robin. Ted finds out Lily has sabotaged all of his relationships with anyone she doesn't approve of and indirectly may have inspired his breakup with Robin (she asked each of them where did they see each other in five years, which is the reason of the breakup in the season 2 episode (Something Blue)). Robin and Ted end up talking about it, causing their friendship to begin moving towards a positive note. Ted finds out that Marshall and Barney have lied to him about keeping the GNB building project alive, despite it being scrapped weeks ago. They try to rectify this by assigning an ETR to design for the 21st floor, but Ted's attempts to be creative with the project cause him to lose his job. However, rather than being angry at this firing, he sees this as a chance to start a new independent career. While Lily abandons the group and disappears for four weeks after hearing a dirty joke from Barney (this was to cover actress Alyson Hannigan's pregnancy), Ted starts his own architecture firm in his own house, complete with an office and a new male assistant, whom Robin ends up sleeping with, Ted fires the assistant, who then smothers Robin to the point of her breaking up with him. However, once Ted re-hires the assistant, the cycle restarts, infuriating Barney, not only upset about the idea of a male assistant, but also with Robin sleeping with him. Since Lily won't talk to him, he decides to slowly reveal his love for Robin to Marshall, who then reveals he already knows. Marshall then lures the assistant to a new job at GNB, leaving Ted to continue his firm alone, but with some support from Robin. As Barney finally sleeps with his 200th woman, after rubbing it in the face of the childhood bully that taunted him into pursuing it by claiming to have slept with 100 women (it is revealed after Barney meets with the bully is that the bully had just made up that he had slept with 100 women), he questions what the rest of his life would be about now, leaving him more certain of his feelings for Robin. Ted, while carrying the yellow umbrella, bumps into Stella and Tony. Tony later decides to visit him, sympathizing with Ted over his loss of Stella. Tony offers him a job as a professor of architecture, which Ted initially turns down. In the season finale, Robin finds out about Barney's love for her, which she cautiously reciprocates. Although she initially refuses to commit to anything but a sex-only relationship; they seemingly end up together anyway. Ted decides he is done being an architect after his final chance as an independent architect is destroyed by a rival, and finally decides to instead teach architecture classes. The finale ends with Ted beginning to teach his first class, and Future Ted reveals that his future wife is among the students. SEASON 5************ In the year 2030, Ted Mosby (voiced by Bob Saget) sits his daughter and son down to tell them the story of how he met their mother. Ted starts his first day as an architecture professor, standing in the middle of a classroom - although the mother was present, it turns out it was an economics class and not the architecture class he is supposed to teach. Barney and Robin have had a sexual relationship throughout the summer and Lily locks them in a room, forcing them to come to terms with their relationship. After a rough patch they decide to break up. Robin describes it instead as "two friends getting back together." Barney immediately goes back to his old ways, using the playbook to score with women. Ted dates a graduate student named Cindy (Rachel Bilson) and it is revealed that her roommate is his future wife. Ted buys a ruined house in which he will live with his future wife and kids. In the season finale, Marshall and Lily make the decision to have a baby. NOTE****** I WILL DO A SERIES OVERVIEW SEPARATELY FOR SEASONS 6 AND 7!!! |
