There was a noise coming from outside. I sat up and saw a crowd of people. They were waving pitchforks and torches.
I jumped out of my bed and left my room. I walked into Alec’s and mother was throwing things in a bag. Alec was changing out of his night clothes. “What’s going on?” I demanded from my mother.
“Go pack your bags, Jane, and go get dressed,” my father said behind me. I ran into my room and changed and started packing my bags.
Mother rushed in with a basket in her hand. “Run to the forest! Here’s your food! Go now!” She shouted, the yelling and shouting of the crowd getting louder and louder.
Mother pushed the basket in my left hand and pushed me out of my room. Alec was waiting for me at the door and we started running. I looked behind me and I heard a man yelling at my father. My father was yelling back.
“What’s going on?” Alec whispered to me.
“I don’t know,” I whispered back.
We ran into the woods and hid in the underground cave. I put the bags in the bottom and I said, “Stay here, Alec.” I started crawling back up and looked at the scene in front of my eyes. The crowd has started a fire and they were burning the house down. Mother was grabbing buckets of water trying to stop the fire. Father was just standing there. Staring at the fire. One of the men grabbed mother and threw her on the ground. She screamed as the water poured on top of her. The bucket hitting her head.
“Find the kids!” A man in the crowd yelled. The crowd yelled and started searching for us.
I crawled back under and I saw Alec was scared. I hugged him and he hugged me back. I grabbed a blanket and put it over us. I leaned my head against the walls of the cave as the footsteps and yelling rang all through the forest.

“Jane? Alec?” I heard a voice yell above me. I sat up and listened to the voice. “Jane? Alec? Where are you?” The voice yelled again. Then it hit me. It was father.
“Father?” I asked, a yawn coming from my throat. I blinked my eyes sleepily. Alec raised his head and looked at me. I started crawling out of the cave and father was there.
“Jane!” He said, lifting me out of the cave. “Where’s Alec?”
“In the cave,” I answered.
“Toss me your things, Alec,” Father said. Alec tossed the bags up and father caught them and put them next to me. Alec climbed out of the cave and father kicked me. “Get up you lazy girl. You got work to do.”
“What?” I asked him, surprised.
“Your mother is missing and I’m hungry. So get to cooking breakfast.” He shoved the basket in my hands and I grabbed some bread and eggs and started cooking. I turned my head and glared at my father. Treating Alec like he was an angel and I was nothing.
“Breakfast- ”
“Jane, don’t say a word again!” Father shouted, smacking my cheek.
We started eating our small breakfast and Alec asked, “Did you search for mother?”
“Yes, I did. I just can’t find her. Jane, pass me the butter.”
I grabbed the basket and looked in it. “There’s no butter, father.”
He smacked me and cursed. Alec and I backed away knowing that when father cursed, he usually started hitting things and throwing things.
After an hour father came back to us. Tears streaming down his face. “I found her,” was all he said. Alec and I looked at each other and started running towards the field. We saw something in the middle of the field and we ran to it.
We got there and I looked down. There was mother. I turned my head away and tears started streaming down my face. I turned back around. I just had to. I looked at her. Blood was smeared all over her body. Her beautiful, blonde hair and been cut to pieces and blood was all over the hair that was left. I noticed insects were starting to go all around her and so were mice and rats. “Get off!” I yelled, throwing a rock at them. They all scrambled off and I was left there, crying.
“Look,” Alec said to me, pointing at the pole. There was a sign written on it. “ ‘Bring the kids and you won’t die Evan.’ ” Alec read out loud.
“What does this-” I started.
“It means you two are going to die!” Father yelled behind us. He grabbed my braid and whispered in my ear, “They mostly want you.” He pushed me to the ground next to mother. He grabbed Alec and kicked him. Alec gasped and fell to the ground. I grabbed a knife that I saw next to mother’s body and threw it at father. The knife cut his arm and he fell to the ground. I grabbed Alec and started running. We ran and ran as fast as we could.

We had been hiding for three hours under a bush, when we heard footsteps coming towards us. “Hold-” Alec started but then a man came up behind us and grabbed us both.
“Come on, brats,” he said, dragging us away. Then I felt something hit my head and everything went dark.
~**~
I woke up. My neck and wrists hurt and I noticed something else. I was tied up to a stake. There were tons of sticks underneath me. I looked at Alec. He was awake and he had hay underneath his stake. This I didn’t understand then.
“Alec?” I asked.
“Yes, Jane?” He answered.
“Just making sure you were okay,” I said.
“Yes, I am. But father isn’t,” he said, motioning his head ahead of us. I looked up and saw him. Father had been burned at the stake!
“Oh no!” I gasped. “We’re going to be burned too!”
“Yea, I already knew that,” Alec said to me.
We didn’t talk for another hour or so. I couldn’t tell but I knew it had to have been a long time. Then we heard voices. We looked and saw a crowd of people walking towards us. Two of the men held torches in their hands. The crowd finally got close towards us.
“We are here today because of the burning of the Witch Twins,” one of the men said. “We will burn these two and let them die slowly and painfully.” He grabbed a torch and carefully put it on the hay under Alec. Alec’s eyes got wide with fear as the fire started slithering up the stake. “The hay represents they boy and how he acts nice and how he acts like he isn’t a witch.” He grabbed the other torch and put it on the sticks underneath me. I got really scared as the flames flicked my toes. “The sticks represent the girl and her evil thoughts. She is to blame for the people who died in the village near us.”
The crowd cheered as the flames started to burn our feet. I started screaming as the flames reached my knees. I heard Alec’s screams and I wanted to just die then.
The crowd started screaming. I opened my eyes and the crowd was running away. “The girl is using her power by sending this demon to destroy us!” yelled a man in the crowd. The man turned away from us and grabbed Alec and threw him to the ground. Alec started crawling away.
The man grabbed me and threw me where Alec had been. He ran off to Alec and I started running as fast as I could. I ran into a barn and jumped into the hay. I head the barn door open and I knew he was coming in. Before I knew it, he had my braid in his hand and he was pulling me out. He picked me up in his arms and ran off really quickly. Then I was lying next to Alec, screaming so loudly. The man bent down and bit me on the neck. I yelled at the top of my lungs as I felt fire running through me. I screamed and screamed and I felt like I was being burned again.
