If i remember rightly from the extras on the DVD - One of the writers knew a soup place in NY where the owner was very picky about who he served, not really a Nazi but highly strung and the episode was based on him. Apparently the shop was then visited by fans of the show and the owner got very angry about people thinking he was the 'soup nazi' and threatened the writer because of it........maybe he was a Nazi ;-)
