End of Chapter 10
"I don't want you to run from me, I can tell you have been running for a long time...and I don't want you to have to run anymore." She said as she looked into my eyes.
"I have been running for a very long time, and maybe it's time I stopped running from my past." I said.
"Was it that horrible?" She asked.
"Oh yes, it was that horrible and much, much more." I said as I shook my head. "I was changed by 3 women who wanted to have the best army in Texas, so they could be the strongest." I said as I closed my eyes, letting myself go.
"I was in charge of the new ones, I was to train them and keep them in line...no matter what. We had many battles with other covens, and won each time..no matter the cost. We were the strongest and most feared coven around, but I realized that I didn't want that to be my life. I knew there had to be something more out there." I said as I opened my eyes and looked at her.
"I escaped one day and have been running ever since, occasionally I will hear that Maria who is one of the leaders, is looking for me. Then I have to move again. I am tired of running." I said quietly.
"Oh Jasper." Alice said as she hugged me tightly. "I'm so sorry. No more running, we will figure this out."
When she said 'we' I had the strangest feeling of pride and joy. I had heard of other couples, that when they met they knew instantly that it was meant to be...and now I was wondering if that was what I was feeling?
Chapter 11
She reached a slender finger over and traced around my eyes, sadness showing on her face. I realized I would do anything to get that look off, she should never look sad.
"You have not ate recently?" She asked.
I shook my head and avoided her gaze. I felt a light touch below my chin as she raised my head up to look at her again.
"Let's go hunt." She said as she looked deep in my eyes.
That's when I noticed that her eyes were the deepest shade of gold. I had never seen one of our kind who's eyes weren't a shade of red.
"Your eyes." I said as I raised my hand to touch her cheek just below her eye.
"I...well I couldn't hurt..I haven't ever fed off humans." She said as she looked away from me.
"Ever?" I asked, shocked by the fact that she hadn't ever fed off humans. What had she been feeding off of, I knew she had eaten recently because her eyes weren't black..and the marks below her eyes were barely noticeable.
"No, I never have tasted human blood. From the time I woke I never wanted to hurt anyone...it might sound strange but I felt bad hurting anyone." She said softly.
She was so gentle, so sweet that she found a way to change her natural ways. She said that she didn't want to hurt anyone, but she was hurting herself by ignoring her hunger.
"How..what have you been surviving off?" I wondered.
She sat up a little straighter, her eyes focusing back on mine. "Well, animals." She said..like that explained everything.
"Animals?"
"Yes, animals. There are so many different types, so many different.....flavors. I do still feel bad about killing, but I have to survive." She said as she smiled.
"Yes you do need to survive." I said as I pulled her closer to me.
What was going on with me? I know I had wondered this a few times already but this was so unlike me. I wanted to touch her, I wanted to hold her close to me and to protect her from everything. The fact that she didn't pull away, but seemed to want to move closer made it all more confusing.
I pulled back and looked at her, she was sitting about one foot away from me, facing me but my arm was wrapped around her shoulders. I didn't understand.
"You are thinking again." She said as she watched my face.
"Yes."
"You don't want to share your thoughts with me?" She sounded hurt.
"This is all so new for me. Like I said, I have never been close to someone before..and the way you look at me and move closer to me. It just is all so new, I'm afraid I will scare you away." I said as I removed my arm from her shoulders.
"I have not either, I avoid people most of the time. They all look at me like I am so small and helpless." Alice said as she scowled..trying to look touch.
I started laughing, the idea of this petite, sweet, loving person being tough was insane. "I can't understand why." I said between laughs.
"I'm not that helpless, I can take care of myself. I have come across a few others before I found you." She said.
She seemed so proud of herself, the fact that she could take care of herself..that she had...fought others. I was suddenly on my feet, my body tense as if I were about to fight someone.
"Jasper?" Alice said as she reached out her hand to me.
I shook my head, realizing that I was making a fool out of myself. I was defensive and ready to fight just at the idea of her having to fight another of our kind. I decided at that moment that I wouldn't let that happen again, she should never have to fight anyone again. I would protect her from everything that would ever think of hurting her.
"Jasper?" She said again, her voice a bit higher.
I shook my head and smiled at her. "I apologize, that was rude."
"Why did you...?" She asked.
"The idea of you fighting, it scared me. I do not doubt that you could take care of yourself, I'm sure you have had to protect yourself before. However; as long as I am with you, I don't think anyone will lay a hand on you." I said, the conviction in my voice echoed across the room.
She wiggled her fingers, a sign that her hand was still stretched out to me. I reached over and too her hand, helping her off the couch. I pulled her close to me, wrapping my arms around her back.
I realized this was the closest we had been, and instantly pulled back..not wanting to scare her away.
"Why do you pull away from me? Did I do something wrong?" She said, her voice cracking.
"No. No you did nothing wrong. I just worry that I am moving too fast, that I will scare you away and you will run from me."
She moved herself close against my body again, her body pressed against mine. "I will not run from you Jasper."
I sighed loudly and wrapped my arms around her again. I hoped that what she was saying was true, that I would not scare her away. She only knew a fraction of my past, and when she found out the rest would she keep her word to stay?
