End of Chapter 18
"Alice," I said as I turned her face so that she was looking at me. "I do believe you, I know that something brought us together. That the minute I saw you I had this urge to protect you, to do anything to make you smile."
"Really?" She asked as she smiled.
"Truly, I don't understand it. I have never met someone like you." I said as I poked her nose.
"You either." She said as she leaned forward, wrapping her arms around me hugging me tightly.
I wrapped my arms around her, pulling her tightly against my chest noticing how her body seemed to fit perfectly against mine.
"I love you." I said as I rested my head against her shoulder.
"I love you." She said softly.
There really wasn't anything else that had to be said at that point, I decided then that I would be content to hold for the rest of eternity if that is what she asked. I would never leave her, I could never leave her...the idea of leaving her causing my still heart to break. I knew in that second that she was right, she knew that we would be together, that I would go to any extent to make sure that we never parted.
Chapter 19
I'm not sure how long we sat on the couch, holding each other but it seemed like the only time either of us moved was to kiss wherever our heads were resting.
The sun started to rise, shining through her front windows...casting rainbows dancing off of our skin. I smiled as I watched the sun hit her hair, the shade of black never changing in the sun. I leaned in, kissing the top of her head where the sun was shining and was surprised when she didn't react at all.
I pulled back so that I could see her face, thinking that she was just relaxed in my arms...being held. When I saw her face though, I knew that she was having another vision...that she was not aware of what was going on now..rather what would happen.
I held her tightly as I counted the seconds. 300 seconds later her eyes flashed open and she gasped slightly.
"Oh." She said as she squeezed me tightly, inhaling against my neck.
"Alice?" I said as I was about to pull back and look at her, but her arms held me tightly making it obvious that she wanted to be held. "Love, are you alright?"
"Mmmmhmmmm" She said against my chest.
"What did you see?" I asked.
"It's ok Jasper, I know you won't mean it." She said against my neck.
I pulled away from her so that I could clearly see her face. She avoided looking me in the eyes for some reason, which made me wonder how badly her vision had scared her.
"What did you see? Please talk to me." I begged.
"I saw....." She said softly, trailing off her sentence. "I saw you." She said finally.
"What was I doing?"
"Hunting." She whispered, and from that whisper I knew that I hadn't been hunting animals.
When I stopped to think about the idea of hunting a person, my throat burned with need. I tried to fight it away, to think of anything other then the fire that was burning in my throat. The only way I managed to fight the demands away, was by burying my face into her hair...inhaling deeply so that her scent was all I could smell.
"I'm sorry." I said against her hair.
"You haven't done anything yet, why are you apologizing?" She asked.
"I upset you, and for that I am truly sorry." I explained.
"You will get it, you will learn to survive the way I do and the others do. I know you will, and I will not hold it against you when you give in." She said, so sure of herself.
"I forget that you have never tasted human blood before, it's something that I do crave. Please don't get me wrong, I did enjoy hunting last night with you, but it did not curb my thirst like humans blood would." I said, feeling a bit guilty for disappointing her already.
"Jasper, I have never drank from a person before..so I don't understand the craving that goes along with it.....but I have traveled with people who lived off of humans. I know that the thirst seemed to be worse for them then it was for me." She said as she hugged herself against me again.
"You are too forgiving, you have already forgiven me for something that hasn't happened yet." I said as I pulled her close against me.
"It will, I know it will. But you will, and yes I will still be with you after...if you want me to." She said, doubting herself again.
"Why wouldn't I want you? I thought you saw us together...and your visions were never wrong?" I asked as I rested my cheek on the top of her head.
"They aren't I just wanted to make sure that you hadn't changed your mind." She said as she pulled back and smiled.
"So we're leaving this town then?"
"Yes, oh...I never explained my vision earlier." She said more to herself then to me.
"Yes, I was going to ask you about that...but I didn't want to pry."
"I think we're going to Washington state." She said as she smiled.
"Washington state?" I asked. "What's there?"
"Ummm well....." She said, biting her bottom lip as she thought about it. "There's a family there..a family of our kind. We are going to join them, to become members of their family." She said.
"Do they know this yet?" I wondered.
"No." She said as she pulled back, smiling. "But they will welcome us into their family once we explain ourselves."
"This could be interesting." I said.
"Will be, this will be interesting." She said against my shirt.
"Oh, I have new clothes for you. They are upstairs in the closet." She said as she looked at the clothes I was wearing.
"You bought me clothes?" I asked.
"Yes, I knew about what size you were. They should fit you perfectly....let's go change." She said as she bounced off of the couch and onto her feet, her hand held out for me to take.
I sighed and shook my head as I took her hand, letting her lead me up the stairs. We had just reached the landing when she stopped and smiled at me.
"I picked good colors for you." She said as she opened the door to the bedroom which held a small couch, a dresser and a good sized bed.
She walked over to the closet, shoving her clothes out of the way as she pulled out five hangers. Two of them held suits, and the others held long sleeved, button down shirts and slacks.
"This one is my favorite." She said as she held out a black, button down shirt that had dark colored pants hung beneath them.
She held them out to me, waiting for me to take the hanger from her hand. I took the hanger that held the black shirt and pants, setting it on the bed as I began taking my shirt off to change it with the new one.
I had gotten all of the buttons undone and was slipping my arm out of the sleeve when I heard her gasp behind me. I turned to ask her what she was gasping about when she moved quickly to my side, her fingers tracing the many scars that covered my body.
