Ok all, this is my original story. I'm freaking out just posting it...LOL. Thanks love for reading it, and giving me the push. Love you!
I rolled over, wishing nothing more then to go back to sleep. I hadn't gone to bed until late, my mind racing as I tried to figure out the riddle that I had been told my entire life. I shook my head, my long black curls falling around my face. I did my best to blow them away, but with this much hair it was impossible to control without a band.
I reached one hand under my pillow, pulling back a blue scrunchey that I had taken out of my hair before I fell asleep. I ran my fingers through my hair, attempting to pull it back, but grumbled as the curls sprung loose of the tie, falling back into my face. Throughout my entire life I had been told that I was 'so lucky' to have curly hair..or 'I pay money to have curls like yours.' Yeah, that made me feel better about the afro that I was fighting this morning.
I realized that there was not point in putting off getting out of bed, that by this point someone in the house had to know that I was awake and it was only a matter of time before I was beckoned for. I swung my feet over the edge of the bed, slowly lowering them until they touched the cold hard floor. I was on my way into the bathroom when I heard someone move to the bottom of the stairs.
"Maijalissa Marie, you best be getting down here. We know you are awake, you best be getting dressed and come down here." My aunt Carol yelled from the bottom of the steps.
"I will be down in a minute." I yelled back as I went into the bathroom.
I bent over into the bathtub, running water over my hair so that I could pull it back, and hopefully have it stay that way. I brushed my teeth and washed my face before going back into my room and pulling on a long cream colored dress. Once I made sure that I was somewhat presentable I made my way down the stairs, my aunt Carol and Jan sitting around the table talking. The second my foot hit the bottom stair though they both turned and watched me closely.
"What?" I asked as I looked at them both carefully.
"You look just like your mother." My aunt Jan said as she stood up and came to hug me.
"She would be so proud of you, I wish she was here." Carol said as she stood up and made her way over.
I hugged them both, tears welling up in my eyes as I thought about my mother who had died last year of cancer. I knew that this was the day that she had been looking forward to my entire life, since I was a child she had told me stories about the day that I would be taken into the woods and shown the 'truth about who we were'. I had asked many, many time what she meant by that but was always told that I would find out when I was old enough. No matter how much begging I did, or pleading she would never say a word other then that I had to grow up first.
Well....today was the day. My 17th birthday, the day that my aunts had been preparing for. They had spent the last few months sending out invites and planning things, but whenever I entered the room or inquired they would just chime in with the same response.
"When the time is right, you will know."
"Maija, will you go and let the horses out?" My aunt Carol asked.
"Sure." I said, wishing I had worn something other then a dress. White dress plus four brown horses...this was not going to end well.
I had just opened the side door when I heard something move on the back side of the barn. I figured it was just a barn cat, or something else and paid no attention to it. I made my way into the barn, heading straight to my brown quarter horse. Piper lifted her head and moved to the rail, waiting for me to go and greet her. I smiled as I stood up on the bottom post, running my fingers along her hose as she sighed.
"Piper, you love me no matter what the day is." I said as I scratched the white diamond between her eyes.
She nuzzled my hand as she looked around the barn, I swear she was more like a puppy then a horse. I knew that she wanted to play, or wanted to be ridden..but with the white dress I knew that this was not the best idea.
"I can't, not right now." I said as I patted her neck and moved to go release the latch that would let them out into the field.
The other three horses had ran out into the field, jumping and playing as they ran...but Piper stayed where she was, watching me carefully. I was about to yell at her, to tell her to get out when she raise up on her hind legs and knocked me to the ground as she screamed.
