Love is "big" but I think that, atleast most fans only love the character that is being portrayed; as you said they do not really know him in person. Fans are fans for a reason, they earn the right to obsess and say they love the one they idolise, this creates a fad or a trend if you will. The more fans he has, the more he will have to love him and buy more of his music.
