Hi,
I am going to be reviewing all of the Metallica albums over the next few weeks, starting with one of the best, Master of Puppets. Remember that everything I say is my opinion, so please don't get bent out of shape if I do not like one of your favorite songs or somthing. This is all just for fun.
Every song I will give a rating of 1 to 10, 1 being worst and 10 being best. After I review every song, I will review the album as a whole.
REVIEW!
Battery: 9/10
This is one of my top ten favorite Metallica songs of all time, and with good reason. Battery has meaningful lyrics, a great solo and is an overall awesome song, one which is fun to listen to over and over again!
Master of Puppets: 8/10
I know that everyone loves this song, but for some reason, it never really connected with me. Don't get me wrong, it is a fantastic song, it's just not one of my favorites. However, even though it is not my favorite, I still believe that is one of the best Metallica songs ever.
The Thing That Should Not Be: 5/10
This song is quite underwhelming, especially when played after the two mentioned above. The other two have great lyrics, guitar solos and whatever else they have, but this one just seems to be lacking in all of it. Not a terrible song, but not impressive either.
Welcome Home (Sanitarium): 9/10
This and Battery are my two favorite tracks on the whole album. This song really grew on me: the first time I was not impressed but when I gave it a second chance, I really started to like it. Now, it is one of my top ten favorites and, in my opinion, is one of the best Metallica songs.
Disposable Heroes: 7.5/10
This song is...hard for me to describe. I like it, but there is just something missing from it, and I am not really sure what. Perhaps it is because most of the song is in the same kind of dark, ominious tune, but oh well, it is still an excellent song.
Leper Messiah: 8/10
This is kind of the same as Disposable Heroes (reguarding what I have to say about it) but I like it better because the rythem is catchy and it's kind of fun, despite it's dark-ish style. One of the better songs on this album
Orion: 6/10
Another song a lot of people like but I am not wild about. I am not a huge fan of the instrumentals, and this song didn't really strike me as being as spectacular or engaging as some of the other songs on the album.
Damage Inc: 7/10
Not really sure what to say about this one...The beginning is kind of strange, but the actual song is fun to listen to, and the whispered'Damage Incorporated' lines that appear throughout the song add to it as well.
FINAL CONSENSUS
Master of Puppets (Album): 8/10
Up there with Ride the Lightning and ...And Justice For All and surpassing Kill 'Em All, Master of Puppets is certaintly one of Metallica's greatest musical achievments. The album has a darker tone to it than their other albums, and their songs succeed in maintaining the tone and being exciting to listen to. With the exception of a few tracks (The Thing That Should Not Be, Orion), all of the songs are very enjoyable.
