The Quest Begins
This was not happening. Percy Jackson was a son of Poseidon. The son of my mother’s rival. I thought after what had happened to Thalia, the gods would have learned they’re lesson! And to think I actually thought Percy and I could work together! That would be totally impossible now!
He was claimed two nights ago, during Capture the Flag. That game would never be the same again. He had left the Hermes cabin to move into the Poseidon one that same night. I felt like I couldn’t talk to him anymore, but we still met for Ancient Greek everyday. Everybody was talking about the hell hound and who could have summoned it. My first thought was Clarisse, but somehow, I knew I was wrong.
It was around six o’clock, Percy was at sword practice with Luke. I was pacing back and fourth in my cabin, thinking about what to do. But, what could I do. I couldn’t change the fact that Percy was a son of the Sea God. I stopped pacing and looked out the window to find Grover, holding a news paper standing by the Poseidon cabin.
I ran out of the Athena cabin to find Grover about to set the news paper on the front steps of the cabin. “ Grover!” I yelled a little frantic.
“ Annabeth, are you trying to give me a heart attack?!” He shouted.
“ Sorry, what are you doing here?”
He handed me the news paper. I looked over it, concentrating hard. To me it looked like “ Ybo Dna Trhmoe llsit Ssnigm Faetr Tarre Kfrae Acr Cciadnt.” “ Di immortals.” I cursed. Stupid dyslexia. I handed it back to him and he read it for me.
Instead of “ ybo dna trhmoe llsit ssnigm faetr tarre kfrae acr cciadnt” it said:
BOY AND MOTHER STILL MISSING AFTER FREAK CAR ACCIDENT
BY EILEEN SMYTHE
Sally Jackson and son Percy are still missing one week after a mysterious disappearance. The family’s badly burned ‘ 78 camaro was discovered last Saturday on a north Long Island road with the roof ripped off and the front axel broken. The car had flipped and skidded for several hundred feet before exploding.
Mother and son had gone for a weekend vacation to Montauk, but left hastily, under mysterious circumstances. Small traces of blood were found in the car and near the scene on the wreck, but there were no other signs of the missing Jacksons. Residents in the rural area reported seeing nothing unusual around the time of the accident.
Ms. Jackson’s husband, Gabe Ugliano, claims that his stepson, Percy Jackson, is a troubled child who has been kicked out of numerous boarding schools and has expresses violent tendencies in the past.
Police would not say whether son Percy is a suspect in his mothers disappearance, but they have not ruled out foul play. Below are recent pictures of Sally and Percy. Police urge anyone with information to call the following toll-free crime-stoppers hotline.
I looked at the phone number that was circled in black, from behind Grover’s back. “ He’s going to be mad when he sees this.” I said.
“ I know.” He replied, setting the news paper on the porch.
We were silent for a moment. Then I asked him,” Does he know his mother is still… alive?”
“Yeah, he knows. When I told him he, mentioned the Underworld.” He sounded a little worried.
“Grover, you don’t really think he’s crazy enough to-”
“ Go into the Underworld and retrieve her?”
I nodded.
“ I don’t know, Annabeth. I mean… he could. Nothing’s impossible when it comes to Percy.”
I had to admit he was right. But would he really do it?
“ Why are you giving this news paper to him any way?” I asked raising an eyebrow.
“He needs to know what’s going on, on the outside world.”
“ Wait a minute, if this is an outside newspaper, then how did you get it?” I sounded skeptical.
“ Luke gave it to me.”
That explains it, Luke was always wandering around the outsides of Camp Half-Blood.
“ Well whatever. I just hope everything can just…come into place.”
“ I do to.”
We talked for a few minutes, then I told him I should be getting back to my cabin. After I past the Zeus, Hera, and Demeter cabins, Katie Gardener popped out of nowhere and scream, “ BOO! Did I scare you?”
I laughed, Katie wasn’t much of tough girl. “ Not really, Katie. But good try though.”
“ Any way, Chiron told me to tell you that he want’s to see you as soon as possible.”
“ Okay, thanks.” So, I made my way to the Big House. I passed the volleyball court and the dinning pavilion, wondering what Chiron wanted to see me for.
As soon as I got there Chiron opened the door for me, as if he was waiting by the door for me to come. “ Hello, Annabeth.” He greeted me quite cheerfully for someone who had just discovered another god had broken a promise that could destroy the world.
“ Hello.” I replied.
“ Please, have a seat.” I sat down, a little bit suspiciously. “ What’s going on, Chiron?”
“ How would you like a quest?”
