Knowing the producers of the series, it will prob take quite awhile before they even consider ending the series, anime and games. Its one of Nintendos best sellers and whats best to get a new young audience/keep your audience? release a main-game every single year with barely any changes, eg COD and pokemon itself. Eventually they will either milk it to they run out of ideas(cash cowing it), people stop watching/buying the series, something better comes along.
One of my main problems with the anime is that Ash doesn't age, he's travelled: Kanto twice, the Orange Islands, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh and currently Unova, seriously I can't see any standard humans like in other series where the character doesn't do the fighting directly, eg: Digimon, travelling 6 landmasses of their sizes(all having 8 cities with towns inbetween(likely more in the anime)) in less then a year. even if he aged somewhat I would prop dislike it a little less.
The main problem with the games is the same basic plot for the main series:
.you get a pokemon to complete a pokedex for the regions professor
.you think screw that and decide to enter gyms
.you beat up evil team for no reason apart from they're evil
.win league
.suddenly remembers that you have a pokedex to do in your free-time
Black/White had a slight orientation where you don't beat the league truly the 1st time round but its basically the same throughout. If they made main-games designed round aspects like the contests, I can see this going better then others, or a pre-set character game; dragon tamers in the dragons den in johto, becoming a member of the elite 4 and having to come in once a week to battle possible champions, more detailed version of pokemon breeding etc, could work well.
but you know what they say, don't fix what isn't broken.
