How does Portal and Portal 2 connect to things that are happening today?

Do you think that the events in Portal and Portal 2 connect in any way to modern events?

To me, the past of Aperture revealed in Portal 2 pretty much represents modern wastefulness and selfishness in corporations and the government. Cave Johnson and later GLaDOS put people in danger and wasted money and resources for their own good, and for "science." The ruthlessness of the people in power...

Anyway, I'd love to hear what other people think. Does anything in Portal 2 remind you of events that happened or are happening in real life, or is Portal completely fantasy?
