Some inner part of me felt ecstatic that Dimitri was here. The other wasn't so cheery. The only reason I had come to Russia, was to get away from him. Almost everyday I remembered the promise we kept to eachother. When in Russia, it's as if was actually with him. The way he described Siberia to me was an exact potrayal of the real thing.
I tilted my head to the side, still having my back to him. I could see him in the distance out of the corner of my eye, walking towards me, stake in hand. I knew he realised that he was been caught.
"Dimitri," I whispered, taken aback. I was going for a more calm, casual tone, but I guess my astonishment held too much.
He seemed to stop when he was close enough to realise the changes of my body in the last four months. My dhamphir dark skin had paled leaving me a chalky white. When I turned, I saw his eyes widen at the red in mine.
But those eyes...those deep, brown eyes were so familiar. They were the eyes that I looked into when I was troubled; when we trained together in the gym and when we made love days before I was turned...Though those same eyes held horror. They were appalled, and I felt hurt but most of all, furious. Both of my fists clenched and my mouth was set into a thin line of anger.
"What are you doing here?" I hissed, though I already knew the answer.
Dimitri's eyes lingered on mine, taking it all in. His shoulder length brown hair was tied back at the neck, as usual. He had on his ridiculous leather duster, that reminded me how I used to know him as comrade. I looked away as so many emotions flooded through me, that I mentally shook them away. I averted my eyes back to his.
I waited patiently for his answer, and after a few long seconds, he provided me with one.
"To kill you," he replied calmy, yet he seemed anxious while he twisting the stake in his hand. I've never seen him so agitated.
I laughed at his response. This man in front of me had trained me, and I proved to be better than him in the field experience. Of course i'd defeat him in a fight, and don't forget the extra speed and strength I had.
He looked at me evenly.
"Comrade," I sweetly laughed the nickname out. "You don't really think you can really kill me, do you?"
He still said nothing, and I took that as a yes.
My smile faded and I studied him. He looked about ready to attack. The only thing stopping him was...well...nothing.
"You don't have to kill me you know."
His eyes tightened. He probably thought that I was suggesting that he let me run along.
"We can be together," I whispered with a smile. "Forever."
The guarded look on Dimitri's face began to loosen as he realised what I was saying. With a firm voice, he replied, "no."
I nodded, encouragingly. "Yes."
He shook his head, now somewhat anxious. "No."
"Yes!" I shouted, impatient. Being a Strigoi sure hasn't helped my temper. He shrank back the slightest bit, and I took a deep, unnecessary breath. "You can pretend that your ready to kill me, but I know your not the slightest bit over me. If you try to attack, your only going to get yourself hurt, and it'll all be a waste of time. Don't deny that you love me Dimitri. I know you still do."
He looked to some extent, angry and confused now.
I took a step foward, feeling the warmth of his body. I reached forward, but he moved back.
"I'm not going to hurt you," I told him. "Honestly."
When I reached up to touch his face, he didn't seem to stop me.
"It's incredible Dimitri," I continued. "So, so incredible. You don't know amazing the world is behind a Strigoi's eyes. And you won't even miss the sunlight, because with this sight, it's like day even at night. And the speed," I whispered, out of breath. "The speed and strength is unbelievable."
Dimitri looked down at me with worry, love, sympathy and sorrow. And that made me angry.
I pushed off him, making him stagger back. "I know you want this," I growled.
"You don't know anything," warned Dimitri. "Your Strigoi, and you don't know what your talking about. It's just the evil inside you talking!" He no longer contained his calm expression.
"Or it's my common sense!" I yelled back. I stepped towards him, crossly, and poked a pale finger at his chest. "I could change your whole life with one-"
I'd been so caught up with our fight that I hadn't realised him move the stake towards my heart. I saw in his eyes that it was killing him, every second he killed myself. My chest burned with every twist and push Dimitri gave the stake.
I couldn't understand why Dimitri was doing this. Why is he killing me? He was supposed to love me, right? I was so distracted with other issues that I missed Dimitri's movements.
I screamed out in agony. My chest felt like it was on fire.
Until the silver stake reached my heart.
It was like that small inner part of me was brought back to life with a spark. Memories flashed through my mind, of Dimitri and how his love played a huge part in my life. The lust spell, the confession of going crazy, the cabin. I looked into Dimitri's grief stricken eyes with love. "You saved me..." I barely made out.
And there, I died in Dimitri's arms, having my last few seconds of life as a Dhamphir.
