It's probably because of Shadow's last voice actor who was Jason Griffith. Jason Griffith did make Shadow a little bit more darker and emotional hence why they call him emo, but I would choose David Humphrey and him over Kirk Thorton.

Also he started to sound a little bit more emo in Sonic Heroes, but in the game Shadow the Hedgehog. That's when all hell breaks loose.
