are the first silent hill and silent hill shattered memories the same?

now before you brush this off as stupid hear me out okay so i'm very new to the silent hill series and have only played one game so far. the reason i'm asking is because i read the summery to the first game and it sounded extremly similer to shattered memories i'm going to play the game either way but i was just curious
