I pictured him without a beard and straighter hair, but that's just me. I also imagined him slightly different to the way Gary Oldman portrayed him acting-wise, but again that's just me and I don't think Oldman did a bad job of the role.

I like Gary Oldman, but I think the script isn`t good. I`m very disappointed in movies, especially with the last one...

Well, for one thing I imagined him with black hair; crazy hair but not curly hair. I thought his hair was straight and frazzled because of Azkaban. I was pretty sure he had grey eyes.

I think Oldman is a good actor, but in my opinion they could have choosen someone else for Sirius, perhaps someone slightly younger, and unknown.
Then for how Sirius is acting in the movies, then I can't blame him so much, he just followed the script (hopefully...)

I agree with zuntiz, gary is a great actor but I wouldn't choose him to be sirius. I pictured him as viggo mortesen, I think.

Not even close to the way I pictured Sirius! Gary is a fantastic actor, and looked pretty hot when he was younger. But he was about 20 years older than Sirius would have been. Sirius was still a young man - only in his early thirties. There are some incredibly handsome actors out there in their thirties and forties! They should have chosen someone younger and handsomer, and made him look somewhat ravaged by his years at Azkaban.

I agree with zuntiz. An unknown would have been the way to go. I hate to say it, but sometimes I think directors prefer to rely on a big name rather than find someone who truly fits the part.

i don't like the way they portray sirius in the movies AT ALL!! they have completely changed his character! very disappointing.

i realise that sirius would not be clean-shaven, etc after being in azkaban for twelve years, but i don't like the idea of him keeping the long hair and moustache. and i don't like the way he dresses, in those suits (i thought he wanted to be different from his family? perhaps he didn't have much of a choice in clothes, after being in azkaban for so long.)

gary oldman is too old to be sirius, i have said that before and i will say it again!

yeah i don't think curls match Sirius that much, and i most definitely pictured him to be taller with bangs like the illustrations suggest. When they came out with the movie i was very much looking forward to that moment when Sirius was hinting for Harry to move into his home and Harry so heartily agreed and Sirius smiled with a smile that reminded Harry of what he saw in pictures. There wasn't even a smile! And Gary Oldman appears elegant as Sirius, I pictured Sirius to be a little more gruff, and maybe a hint of mischief lol... Besides, I know he's not American Indian or Asian or something of the sort, but there ARE some men out there whose chins are naturally (or somewhat) less hairy and are still manly. I also pictured him without a beard.

He was pretty vividly pictured in the books, having matted long black hair, sunken grey eyes, the appearence of a skeleton, Gary Oldman, even though he did a good job as Sirius, is VERY different then the physical description given in the books.

when they said they were making the books into films.the actor I thought of for sirius was gary Oldman! hes perfect! but they havent used him enough,as hes such a great character.

When I saw the movie I was like OMG ITS SIRIUS BLACK! LOL then I had 2 remind myself that Sirius isn't actually reel...lol. yeah..they picked the rite guy 4 Sirius! :) GARY OLDMAN ROX!

Yeah, he does. The Sirius on the posters scared me... and that's okay, because (as someone else already said) he just broke out of prison...
Then the 'cleaned up' Sirius appeared... and yeah, I think he looks pretty much as I figured he would. Also, I think (in the little screen time he did get) he portrayed him really well.

Sirius is like one of my top 5 favorite characters!!! And Gary Oldman does an AMAZING job as him.

He looks a bit like Sirius in my head. The Sirius in my head had the same bedraggled hair and kind of tired look you would get from being in Azkaban, like he does in the film, like Bellatrix does... I thought of him as a bit younger though, but I probably prefer him this way.
@kerikeri: I don't think Johnny Depp would have done the role justice. He's a bit too clean-shaven...I mean, even in Sweeney Todd he was still like that, relatively...(well, he was playing a barber, silly me.) But I'd prefer a proper British actor, like Gary, than an American one no matter how good they are at playing British roles, because Sirius and most of the roles except maybe Susan Bones in the movie were British. Besides, we already have the lovely Helena Bonham Carter and the shrunken head. If we add Johnny into the mix it might as well be a Tim Burton film.

No, and anyone who does didn't read the books carefully enough. Now don't get me wrong I love Gary Oldman as much as the next person and thought he did a wonderful job, but he looks nothing like Sirius. Sirius had long naturally black hair (not dyed or gothic as some would have you believe natural and ceartinaly not wavy brown), aristocratic cheekbones, and piercing grey eyes (not brown like some will claim, grey eyes is a canon fact). He was tall really tall, he is described as at least a head taller then Snape and as height is never a described trait of Lupin was can assume he was taller then him as well. Sirius was supposed to be physically imposing even as an undernourished prisoner so I always saw him as tall thin but broad shoulders showing how powerful he could be. He was only in his late thirties for goodness sake, yes Azkaban made him look older but an old looking thirty year old does not look in his late fifties (not that Gary is old just older then Sirius and don't get me started on 22 year old James and Lily grrr), their should have been moments where you could see his true age like when he smiles for the first time. Gary gave a wonderful performance but to claim he looks like the Sirius described in the books is grossly inaccurate.
