How do you guys make light coloring?

I like the lighting in these kinds of icons, how it shines in a certain spot, and it has pretty, easygoing colors, sorta.

Can anyone teach me how to make them on my own?
I have PhotoshopCS & Gimp, if anyone would like to share their knowledge.
