The Harry Potter Books Question

Lucius Malfoy's lapdog?

I don't really get what the reltionship between Malfoy and Snape.
Sirius called Snape "Lucius Malfoy's lapdog". And Umbridge said something like "and Lucius Malfoy always speaks so highly of you!"
I get that they were/are both death eaters, and that Malfoy was a prefect when they entered school, but i still don't understand.
Narcissa said that Snape was an old freind of Lucius's, but i didn't think Snape would ever consider him a friend.

What's their relationship? Is it a one-sided kind of aquantinship? Or is Snape just a friend of the whole Malfoy family?

I think Sirius called him that to make him angry. Snape and Lucius must be friends in the way Death Eaters are, a little competitive, but helping one another. Draco was Snape's favorite, and I think it was because he was Lucius son, a true Slytherin and all that. I don't thnik either Lucius nor Snape considered their relationship as master-lapdog, in fact, after Snape killed Dumbledore, he gained more power and rank in the Death Eaters' circle.
