Why is Damon with Rose and why do they both have to turn their emotions off in order to protect elena??????????

Eventually Rose says that there is NO switch to turn your emotions off. You just don't feel what you want to feel.
Rose doesn't really have any connection to Elena so I don't see how she'd want to protect her.
Damon shut his feelings off because he didn't want his love for Elena make him weak. But he wants to protect Elena-will protect Elena. He loves her, he would do anything for her. :)
