should i read the books?

well, i only know about the vampire diaries because of the tv show and i've heard the books have pretty much nothing to do with the tv show, so my question is, what's your fans advice, 'cuz i;m also a fan of HP and i'm really desappointed in almost every movie (specially david yate's) and i don't want to get desappointed in TVD too
