Does Elena get turned into a vampire in the book series?

I tried reading the book series but just could not get into it; however I did fall in love with the tv series. I have heard rumors that lj smith had planned on stefan erasing her memory to make her forget about him, because he had almost completely drained her leaving her with daimon. I do not get it though if she is already a vampire and considered dead then how could he have drained her.
