I think Damon fell in love with Elena at first sight, but I don't think it was mutual at first. Damon was kind of a dick when the show first began and Elena really hated him.

i think for Damon it was love at first site. He hadnt fell for anyone like that since Kathrine. For Elena, i think it was an instant attraction. She was with Stefan, but just meeting Damon, you could see that sparkle in her eye.
