Slowly days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months. One day in April Ludwig came home from school, and saw that the suitcases were packed . ‘’Mutti what is this?’’ he confusedly asked. His mother looked at him while she closed a suitcase ‘’Honey I found a job in a bakery in the west.’’ ‘’The west?’’ Ludwig asked surprised ‘’But that’s far away right?’’ ‘’That’s why we’re going to live with grandma.’’ She said. Ludwig was still a bit confused ‘’But.’’ ‘’Ludwig would you please pack you stuff?’’ Ludwig did what his mother said and packed his stuff. Ludwig’s bag was very small so he couldn’t take a lot of stuff with him. The only things he packed were some clothes, a little bit of food and the paper flower his brother fold for him. When he packed all his stuff Ludwig and his mother left the house.
After about fifteen minutes of walking they arrived at the graveyard where Gilbert was buried. ‘’Mutti can I?’’ Ludwig asked. Ludwig’s mother gave her son a kiss ‘’Of course, my dear.’’ she said. Gilbert’s grave was not far from the entrance so Ludwig was allowed to walk there alone.
‘’Hello, Gilbert.’’ He said when he stood in front of his brother’s grave. ‘’How are you doing? The east has been doing worse since you’re gone, but luckily Mutti has found a job in the west. That’s why we are going to live with grandma from now on.’’ Ludwig opened his bag and took the paper flower out. ‘’Look I took your flower with me. I look at it every single day. I just don’t want to forget about you. I’ll treasure it.’’ ‘’Honey, we really have to go now.’’ His mother called. ‘’I’m coming Mutti.’’ Ludwig put his flow back in his bag and stood up. ‘’I’m afraid I’ll have to go now. It’ll take a long time before I can come back to the east. But once I can I’ll visit you again. Will you greet grandpa and Vati from us?’’
Ludwig ran to his mother and continued walking. He kept staring at the graveyard while he and his mother were walking. He didn’t turn his head until he couldn’t see the place anymore. After half an hour Ludwig realized that he was in the west. The houses were big and colorful and the people looked really happy. ‘’We are here, Ludwig.’’ His mother said when they stopped at a big white house. She knocked on the door and an old woman around her sixties opened it. ‘’Hello my dears please come in, come in.’’ she said. When Ludwig walked in he stared to yawn. ‘’Oh dear you must be tired.’’ said his grandma ‘’Come I’ll show you your room.’’ Ludwig followed his grandma until they stopped in front of the door next to the stairway. ‘’Here is your room.’’ She said.
Ludwig couldn’t believe his eyes when he entered the room. It was so much bigger than his small room in East-Berlin. There was a nightstand with a light next to his bed, a bookcase in the corner and even a television in front of the wall. ‘’Unbelievable’’ Ludwig thought. He allowed himself to fall down on his new bed and put the paper flower on his nightstand. ‘’Goodnight, my dear’’ his grandma said and she put the light off. ‘’Goodnight, Gilbert.’’ Ludwig said when he was staring at the flower. After a few seconds Ludwig’s eyelids started to feel heavy, he closed them and fell into a deep slumber.
Life was good in West-Berlin. Ludwig had clean new clothes and more toys than he could’ve dreamt of. He also had a lot of friends in school whom he played with every single day. One day Ludwig was playing soccer with his friends when he heard a loud noise in the distance. Ludwig was curious so he decided to check it out. He couldn’t believe what he saw when he arrived at the place. Big machines were building a giant wall right in front of his eyes. The wall was not finished yet, but Ludwig exactly knew its purpose. The boy felt terrible it felt like he would never be able to return to the east again. Ludwig already walked away after one minute. He couldn’t stand the sight of the wall without feeling anger, despair but especially sadness. Ludwig saw the wall every day when he walked to school, but he couldn’t get used to it. The terrible feeling would always return.
Seven years later Ludwig went abroad for the first time in his life. He went on a holiday to Tuscany and had the time of his life. Everything there was great. The food, the old buildings but what he liked the most was Maria. Ludwig met Maria at the beach on his second day in Italy. The two became friends very quickly. They would always meet at the same place and spend their time together. Before they knew it, they fell in love. Ludwig wrote a lot of letters to Maria after he returned and every single letter was answered. Three years later Ludwig’s grandma passed away. Ludwig decided to return to Tuscany to meet Maria again. He proposed to her and got married six months later. They bought a house in a village in Tuscany and started their new life there.
