Here I will post Comparison Screencaptures from 3 different versions of Pocahontas:
The 1996 Walt Disney Classics VHS. The 2000 Walt Disney Gold Classic Collection DVD. The 2012 Walt Disney Special Edition Blu-Ray. FIRST IMAGE: Walt Disney Classics VHS. Released: February 28, 1996 Aspect Ratio: 4:3 Image Quality: An okay quality for this VHS release. Not the best quality, but it's watchable. SECOND IMAGE: Walt Disney Gold Classic Collection DVD. Released: June 6, 2000 Aspect Ratio: 1.66:1, Letterboxed. Image Quality: Pocahontas appears in an aspect ratio of approximately 1.66:1 on this single-sided, double-layered DVD; the image has not been enhanced for 16X9 televisions. This one turned out to be one of Disney’s weaker transfers. Sharpness generally seemed quite good, with most images appearing crisp and well-defined. Some softness affected wide shots, however, and those appeared mushier than they should. Jagged edges and moiré effects were not a problem, though, but I noticed edge enhancement and a lot of artificial sharpness at work here. We never got the Two-Disc 10th Anniversary Edition DVDs in Denmark, so until the Blu-Ray release in 2012, this is the version I had to put up with. So you can imagine my surprise, when I saw the upgrade in the image quality. THIRD IMAGE: Walt Disney Special Edition Blu-Ray. Released: August 21, 2012 Aspect Ratio: 1.78:1 Image Quality: The best Pocahontas has ever looked on home video. Having been stuck with the 2000 Gold Collection DVD Transfer for years, I was completely blown away by the huge step up in image quality. Pocahontas is stunning, full of lush, lively colors, rich primaries, gorgeous blacks, and vibrant contrast and clarity. Detail is exceptional too. The animators' line art is crisp and clean, the backgrounds are teeming with hand-painted beauty and brushstroke textures, and every last nuance of the animation is on display for all to see.
