When growing watermelons, what does it mean when you get a few that are shriveled, or getting black spots on the melon?

My husband and I got into gardening with the help of one of his enthusiastic friends, who came over to help get us started with a crop of vegetables. We found the watermelon plans at a nursery one day, and impulsively bought them. Wow. Are we glad we did!
