When those three were together, they represented the family I never had.
Adrian was just Adrian; even though he was astonishingly ragged in appearance, there was something about him that symbolized him being the younger brother. He was dangerous, fast, and cunning with his tongue. I almost thought, that one time I saw him and Marcus battle it out, that Marcus should just give up before he got himself killed. Of course, Marcus knew that already, and they weren't even really fighting to begin with. With what started with growls and ferocious snapping ended up being laughs and pats on the shoulder. There was something about Adrian that said, 'if you really want to fight me down to the bones that burn against my blood, be warned that I am immortal for a reason.' And every day he seemed to show that more and more, what with the bulging biceps and the workouts at the gym nearest to the forest. When I asked him if I could come along, he laughed and rubbed my spiky hair as if that was a joke.
Then there was Dimitri: brooding, silent, and seemed more like a warrior than any of us could hope to be. (to all of us he was like the teenage brother going through the silent-keep-away-from-me stage) Any human that looked at him could think that he once wanted to play for a film like 300, but for him, the worst possible option he would ever want would to be near that many humans during the day. I often wondered why he gave responses like that when he looked like he could take down a whole city in a day if you asked him to. I never asked, though; just like he never asked about my past. We were even, I think.
Lastly was Marcus: leader, and his height and built showed it. I remembered long ago when my friend took my over to his house to watch Underworld. I couldn't remember what the man's name was now, but I knew that Marcus was the spitting image of him. In my mind I pictured him being some sort of long-lost ancestor of the dude on Underworld. With Marcus's sharp instincts and keen sense of knowledge, I would pass the idea away; Marcus would defeat that 'vampire' if he was given the chance. Like leader, Marcus was our father; he bit Dimitri, and Dimitri bit Adrian. Now Adrian bit me.
And I was praying to God that the cycle didn't continue. My first few days of rest were dreaded; seeing myself kill an innocent wasn't something that was on my to-do list when I got older. Being a vampire wasn't on it either.
But now I know better; to think that I was scared of biting someone is a mistake. What I should have been more worried about was the process that came before wanting to drink blood.
Ask a solitary vampire this: do you regret getting bitten? He'll say no, of course. But if you ask whether they regret getting bitten and having to suffer the migraines, the fevers, the chills, and the lonliness of not having family around you to understand... the number one answer will be Hell Yes.
You may think that vampires are the most godly creatures on earth, but it takes more than just a bite to be beautiful.
