I flew into the familiar greenish mountain and found my teammates in the Mission Room, along with Batman and Red Tornado.
"The birthday girl!" Robin greeted as I came up beside him.
Batman looked at the computer screen. "The daughter of wealthy company owner, Jack Nelson, is the next target for the League of Shadows. We have word that they are sending an assassin after her." He looked firm. "In the next few hours, the team is to watch her every step, just in case. Can you handle that?"
Superboy scoffed. "With my powers, I can handle anything."
Megan gave him a stern look before answering. "We understand. Come on team!"
KF groaned and sat down on the expensive leather ocuch. "I'm tired. We've been patrolling for HOURS!"
I yawned. "Suck it up, Kid. If Batman wasn't sure of the assassin, he wouldn't have sent us here."
He ignored me and closed his eyes. "Wake me up when the assassin actually comes..." his snoring could be heard in all of Gotham.
Megan yawned from behind me. "Actually, it's getting kind of late, Jenny. Do you think Batman was wrong?" she questioned mentally.
I don't know. But we can't risk it.
Aqualad looked out the big window, where we could view most of Gotham. "Megan's right. Maybe we should phone the league."
"I'll do it," Artemis said quickly. She pulled out her communicator, when I heard a loud BOOM.
"Wait," I whispered. "Someone wake up KF."
Superboy shook the speedster awake, and he jumped up yelling a karate shout.
"Shut up!" Artemis hissed.
"Megan and Artemis, go guard the daughter's door. We'll handle what's coming," Aqualad instructed.
I crouched in a defensive position, ready to attack.
A person in a green suit suddenly leaped into the room, with two knives in her hands. She ran toward the room, but Aqualad formed a wall of water.
She lunged for my face, but I sent her flying into Megan's telepathic wall with Air.
Through her mask, I could feel her glaring. She took out a walkie-talkie from her pouch. "Abort the mission. The supers are here." She ran out as quickly the way she came.
Artemis sighed, relieved. "She's gone."
From here, I could hear a faint beeping. "Wait, I hear something..." I followed the sound to the front of the bedroom door, then realized what was beeping.
"A smoke bomb!" I yelled.
"We need to get the assassin!" Aqualad ordered.
I grabbed the bomb and flew out the window, throwing it as high into the air as I could. I could see a little gray cloud--that meant we were safe.
I spotted a green figure running on top of the buildings, so I followed it. The assassin was trying to reach a waiting helicopter.
"I don't think so," I muttered, jumping her.
I pulled her towards the ground, then handcuffed her. "Who are you?" I demanded.
She didn't answer.
I decided to go against my usual code of honor, and took off her mask. I gasped. "Cheshire?"
She smiled slyly. "The one and only."
"You tried to kill me two years ago!" I accused.
She shrugged. "I'm an assassin, that's my job."
Police sirens came around the corner, and parked right in front of the light pole we were standing under. I grabbed her by the arm and shoved her inside the car.
"Be gentle," she panted.
"Why should I?" I snapped. It was then did I realize that on her stomach, was a tiny lump.
"I was just looking for my baby," she breathed.
Baby? "What do you mean?"
She smiled. "I'm not that heartless, Thomas." The police closed the door on her and drove away.
I stood there, dumbfounded, wondering how an assassin would have time to get a baby. I didn't know why, but hysteria was creeping up on me. It wasn't like I had anything to do with it. And how did she lose it?
I shrugged, then flew back to the building to find my team.
