The rest of the day passed in a leisurely manner. But the next day made up for that. Dick walked into the kitchen where the girls were eating. They each greeted him as he sat down. Kendra placed a plate of pancakes in front of him.
“So what do you girls have planned for today?” Dick asked.
“Training,” Becca said as she got up to take care of her dishes.
“Training? For what?”
“Anything. We need to know how strong you are, how well you can fight, how agile you, ect. Elithia is not one to wait. The faster and more we teach you, the better.”
“Becca is the one who wants you fighting,” Zatanna explained in a hushed tone. “I suggested spells and potions, but she quickly rejected it.”
“Why?”
“Becca hates magic,” Artemis jumped in.
“Again, why?”
“Because of Elithia,” Kendra mumbled.
“What happened?”
“Well, apparently, Elithia killed Becca's parents with magic,” Zatanna said.
“Does she know for a fact that's how they died?”
“She claims she watched them die,” Artemis announced.
“And you three don't believe her?”
“We're not sure. Becca's pretty closed off. What we do know is that she hates magic and has sworn to hate using it in battle.”
They got quiet as Becca walked back into the room. She narrowed her eyes as they all looked at her.
“Mature,” Becca said, walking through.
Dick heard her mumbling about “gossiping roommates” as she headed towards the stairs. A knock on the door sounded, and Becca changed her direction with a groan. Dick left to head to his room, when he heard Becca scream. All four of them ran to the door, but stopped. Two guys were there, Becca hugging both of them. One had dirty-blonde hair and green eyes. He wore all black and was carrying a skull in one hand. The other had light gray hair and silver-blue eyes. He wore a blue t-shirt with a long-sleeved white shirt and black jeans. He carried a bag in one hand.
“Becca, who are they?” Kendra asked.
“Oh! Guys, these are some friends of mine from when I worked in Elithia's palace. Cole and Chase.”
Cole, the boy with gray hair, smirked.
“Pleasure to meet you. Becca, why did you never tell us you had roommates?”
“Cause she knows your a creeper,” Chase, the dirty-blonde haired boy, answered.
Becca giggled.
“You two better stop teasing,” Becca said.
“Or else what?” Cole asked.
“Or else I won't introduce you to the others.”
Cole smirked, wrapping an arm around Becca's waist.
“Alright. We'll stop. Now, introduce us to your friends.”
Becca smiled, slipping from Cole's grasp. She went up to Dick and grabbed his hand, threading their fingers together.
“Cole, Chase, this is Dick Grayson. Then there's Artemis, Kendra, and Zatanna. Cole and Chase are brothers. Cole is a shapeshifter, and Chase is a demon. And I honestly have no idea what they're doing here or why Chase is holding a skull.”
“Oh. This is just something I found. But it's got a diamond in it. I thought you might be able to keep it safe.”
Becca took the skull from Chase, peeking inside.
“Wow. That is a pretty big diamond. I can protect it.”
“Thanks Becca.”
Chase leaned in and kissed her cheek before Cole spoke up.
“We were just at the old castle and we found some of your old stuff. Most of the castle has been burned, but we salvaged all we could. That's what's in the bag.”
“Thanks Cole.”
Becca took the bag from him and looked through it's contents. She blinked back a few tears.
“Wanna help me put this stuff up Cole?” Becca asked.
“Sure.”
They headed up to her room, and Chase looked at the others.
“Sorry to come unexpectedly,” he said. “But Cole really wanted to give her those things.”
“Then she really did work for Elithia?” Dick asked.
“Yeah. Look, Becca may not be the most...open person, but she doesn't lie unless she has to. And when I say that, I mean life or death.”
The others nodded. They lead Chase to the living room where they sat, kind of awkwardly. Kendra and Artemis soon left, and Zatanna headed to the library. Chase turned to Dick as soon as they left.
“So you're the Red King. To be honest, I was surprised I saw you. I always saw the Red King as...I don't know, a little darker in personality.”
“I'm not the Red King.”
Chase scoffed.
“Yes you are. I'm a demon. We can sense these things. Besides, the Red King wouldn't be afraid of fire. Have you ever seen fire Dick?”
“Yeah. Why?”
“Have you ever tried to touch it?”
“What? No! That's stupid!”
“It's not. You can't get hurt by the fire. It won't burn you.”
Chase's hand started to blaze with fire.
“You want to touch it, don't you?”
Dick's eyes stayed on the flickering fire. Chase watched him. Dick's eyes seemed to soak up the fire's light and he reached a hand out slowly. As his fingers touched the fire, Chase felt the heat leave his body. He quickly snuffed out his fire. He looked at Dick.
“Did it burn you?”
“Did what burn me?” Dick asked.
Chase opened his mouth to speak, when Kendra came back in.
“Anyone want something to drink?” she asked.
“You have fireflower nectar?” Chase asked.
Kendra nodded and Chase smiled.
“Dick? You want something?”
“No thanks Kendra. I'm good.”
Kendra nodded again before leaving. Dick turned back to find Chase staring at him.
“What?”
“You soaked up my fire, but you have no memory of it. It's like the fire enchanted you in a way that brought your special powers to the front of your mind.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Try making a ball of fire in your hand.”
“What? Why?”
“Just do it.”
Dick looked at Chase skeptically before looking at his hand. Chase watched with satisfaction as a small fire lit in Dick's palm.
“Whoa!”
“Calm down, Dick. It's not burning you, is it?”
“No. It's not even...it's there, I just can't feel it's heat.”
Chase smiled.
“Then you have to be the Red King.”
