A double storyline to introduce two of the best DC Comics characters ever.
The Cause Behind the Cowl
Prologue-
The school bell rang as the students filed in. Barbara Gordon closed her locker and turned to see Dick Grayson smiling at her.
Barbara let out an exhausted sigh and turned to the boy. "What now, Richard? More homework?"
"Nah!" the teen replied. "I just wanted to say hi!"
"Well now you've said it. Go." Barbara said, slightly irritated.
"Someone is certainly not feeling the aster."
Barbara groaned and started walking away. Dick followed.
"Why are you following me?" she asked.
"Why did you talk to me this time?" Dick asked.
Barbara sighed and groaned again. She desperately tried to think of an answer when another girl walked up.
"Barbara? You're going the wrong direction. English was changed to Room 307!" the girl said. She glared at Dick before snatching the Police Commissioner's daughter away.
Dick sighed. At that moment, his phone rang. Batman's face appeared on the screen.
"No. No. No. And no." Dick began. "I'm in school. If I skip one more day, I'll lose my highest honors."
Batman glared at him.
Dick sighed. "What is it?"
"The Team is heading on a mission to Santa Prisca. They need someone who knows Bane." Batman said.
Richard had ducked into an abandoned hallway, but he still had to be careful.
"Then why don't you go along?" he asked.
"I'm with the Justice League on Tarin IX." Batman replied.
"And what about the state dinner tonight?" Richard asked.
"The usual." Batman said.
Dick sighed. "Fine. I'll get Alfred to send in a note that I'm sick."
"Good. Kaldur will be glad to-"
"Grayson?" a voice cut through the air.
Dick slammed the device closed and began coughing terribly.
"Don't even." Barbara said, walking around the corner and putting her hands on her hip, leaning her head slightly to one side. Even upset, mad, and inquiring, she still looked hot to Dick. "Who we're you talking to about the Justice League and a state dinner?"
Dick opened his mouth but Barbara interrupted him again.
"Don't lie to me."
"A friend in a high place." Dick responded, saying each word extremely carefully.
"I told you-"
"I didn't!" Dick exclaimed. "I'm just not giving you the whole truth."
"Why not?" Barbara asked.
"One: You hate me. Two: I can't tell anyone." Dick said.
"Ah, I see." Barbara said.
Dick groaned.
"Can you say I'm sick today?" he asked.
Barbara opened her mouth, a fiery expression in her eyes, but slowly closed it before nodding.
"Thanks, Babs!" Dick said, running off. "I owe you one!"
"I'll hold it to you, Dickie." she called after him.
Dick grinned and stepped into a bathroom, his school shirt off and his Robin one quickly replacing it.
