I dreamed, clutching tightly to a soft blanket. I had since moved from my little hutch in the clearing, and gone into the mountain. No one went into her room, not even Jessica. Some people wouldn’t believe she was dead-- Mercy continuously argued with everyone who knew she really was. Jessica and I knew. She wasn’t coming back. And I had since received her full powers. I was the new number three firecaster on the team.
I hated it. This wasn’t me.
Tonight I shifted restlessly on the mattress, nightmares plaguing my sleep. Most were about her, how she died, Chelsea delivering the final blow that killed her. These weren’t very unusual. But tonight I did have one I’d never had before.
A young teen girl, maybe 13 years, perched on a dining room table. Barefoot, her legs swung back and forth underneath the wooden support. She wore a loose, light pink tank top and white jean shorts that frayed on the edges. On her thin, tan arms were gold bangles, softly clinking with her every breath. Her sleek ebony hair reached to her waist. It fell carelessly into her face and barely covered her bright sapphire eyes. She gave me a small, warm smile. It suddenly hit me who she was.
I was looking at Fin, and she was perfect.
As I felt myself beginning to run, the living room she was sitting in expanded into a grassy hill overlooking a calm blue ocean... or lake. I wasn’t sure, but it didn’t matter as I continued to dash even closer to Fin. She now rested on the ground, still smiling, and giving off a wonderful glow, that was just barely there. I flung my arms around her and sank into her lap. “Kyra...”
“Hello, Kaylee.” She placed a hand on my head, and began running her fingers through my crimson waves, comforting me.
“You’re dead.”
She laugh, and I felt myself lighten up a bit. I missed her laugh. “Yeah, I’m dead.”
“But you’re right here. I’m talking to you.”
“You’re right.”
“So... are you an angel?”
I blushed furiously as the question escaped my lips. She had to be an angel. What else would she be?
But she only laughed again. “No, I’m not an angel.”
“Um...”
“I don’t even know what I am, Kay.”
I looked up at her and found a sad smile. "You have to be strong," she explained, cuddling me closer. But I couldn't bear it. I began to sob.
"Why'd you leave, Kyra?"
"I had to."
"No! You didn't! If Chelsea hadn't--"
I broke down at her name. I hated that bitch. She'd taken Kyra... she'd taken my older sister away from me. I wouldn't let her get away with that. After a while, I was calmer.
"Why me?"
"Hmm?"
"Why are you talking to me?"
"Oh. I talked to everyone else that needed to be talked to. Danna, Dick, Mercy, Aisling."
"Oh."
"Mm."
Someone called Kyra in the distance. She looked up and smiled, that same warm smile she'd given me before. "I have to go now."
"Will you..."
"I'll always be here." She unclasped her locket, a locket I'd never seen her without, and placed it in my hand.
"What about the one--"
"I gave to Danna? Not the real one." She smiled again and kissed my forehead. "Love ya, Kay."
"I love you too."
I woke up in a cold sweat and hugged my knees to my chest. Sunlight poured through the windows. I glanced into my hand and found her locket there. I sighed and looked up.
Now the question was if it was real.
