Saturn Awards: Noah Wyle and Grant Gustin among special honorees

Noah Wyle, whose post-“ER” credits include roles as academics-turned-heroes tasked with saving the world in “Falling Skies” and “The Librarian,” will be presented with the Artists Showcase Award from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films at the 41st Saturn Awards.

In “ER” Wyle played John Carter, who at the start of the series was a medical student. Lately he has added a few genre roles to his résumé.

Since 2011 Wyle has played Tom Mason, a history-professor-turned-civilian-fighter in the TV series “Falling Skies,” the postapocalyptic sci-fi series chronicling the aftermath of an invasion by several races of extraterrestrials that kill most of the human population.

Wyle also plays Flynn Carsen, a perpetual college student who finds himself recruited as a librarian tasked with protecting supernatural artifacts in a secret section of the library in “The Librarian” franchise, which started as a series of TV films in 2004.

Other Special Awards honorees include executive producer Carlton Cuse, actor Grant Gustin, composer Robert Cobert and the TV series “Continuum.”

Cuse, who will receive the Dan Curtis Legacy Award, is the show runner and executive producer on the “Psycho” prequel series “Bates Motel,” the vampire drama series “The Strain” and the supernatural drama series “The Returned.”

Cuse also served as a co-show-runner and executive producer on the series “Lost.”

Newcomer Gustin, whose previous TV credits include roles in “Glee” and “90210,” is perhaps best known for his starring role as Barry Allen in “The Flash.”

The fan-favorite CW TV series based on the DC comics character is a spinoff of “Arrow” and chronicles Allen’s transformation into the titular superhero following an accident at S.T.A.R. Labs that finds the assistant forensic investigator imbued with superhuman speed.

Gustin will be presented with the Breakthrough Performance Award.

Cobert, who has been composing music since 1956, will be presented with the Life Career Award for his work on titles such as “Dark Shadows,” “The Night Stalker,” “The Norliss Tapes,” “Burnt Offerings,” “The Winds of War,” “War and Remembrance” and the theme for the Dick Clark game show “The $25,000 Pyramid.”

The academy will also honor the sci-fi series “Continuum” with the Special Recognition Award.

The series, which premiered in 2012, follows the efforts of Kiera Cameron (Rachel Nichols), a police officer from an Orwellian future who traveled back in time to prevent terrorists from executing their plan to alter the past to change the future. The series will be ending its run later this year.

Founded in 1973, the Saturn Awards are presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films to recognize and honor the best in genre entertainment.

The 41st Saturn Awards will be held on June 25 at the Castaway Starlight Ballroom in Burbank.
