. Sometimes it feels like the characters can\'t sneeze without an enigmatic stranger popping up to warn them that the snot will have mystical consequences. The trouble is, some of those prophecies have proven to be very significant, so we can\'t discount them.

Neither can we take them at face value. As George RR Martin says, "Prophecy is a staple element in fantasy, but it\'s tricky… You want to play with the notion of prophecies coming true but in an unexpected way."

Meaning, don\'t beat yourself up trying to guess what happens next. But here are the main visions and foretellings from the show that have either come true already, appeared to come true, or have yet to be fulfilled. Or might just be Martin and the showrunners screwing with our heads.

•The Three-Eyed Raven told him he would find his father, Ned Stark, in the crypts at Winterfell. When he went down there, Maester Luwin arrived to tell him his father was, in fact, dead. So that sort of came true-ish. STATUS: True-ish

•He dreamed that the sea would flood Winterfell. Well, Theon Greyjoy – representative of the seagoing Iron Islanders – took over the castle from him, so that came true-ish, too. STATUS: True-ish

• In his weirwood vision in Season 4, he saw a dragon flying over King\'s Landing. Not happened yet. Probably going to happen soon.STATUS: Unproven

• In his weirwood vision in Season 6, he saw green fire exploding through some crypts. 

Turned out Cersei and Qyburn had discovered (or placed) a stash of wildfire below the Great Sept of Baelor and the explosion totally happened. Consider that one 100% verified. STATUS: True

• Mirri Maz Duur, the vengeful crone who killed Daenerys\' baby in the womb in Season One, told her that Dany\'s husband Khal Drogo would return to consciousness "When the sun rises in the west and sets in the east. When the seas go dry and mountains blow in the wind like leaves. When your womb quickens again, and you bear a living child. Then he will return, and not before."

Is that even a prophecy? Sounds like trashtalk to us, rubbing in the fact that Daenerys can no longer bear children, and that her husband was – at the time – braindead. Some fans of the books, however, think that Quentyn Martell (one of the Dorne lot who doesn\'t appear in the show) represents the "sun" – it\'s his house\'s sigil – rising in the west and that an offhand comment about the Dothraki sea – ie the prairie – drying up represents the bit about the sea. But whatevs. STATUS: Meh

• Remember when Daenerys went to Qarth and met some warlocks? No? Don\'t blame you, it was ages ago and felt a bit like an unnecessary digression at the time. But she had a vision in the warlocks\' House Of The Undying: she saw herself in the Throne Room of the Red Keep in King\'s Landing, where the roof had caved in and there was snow (or ash?) everywhere. We\'re taking this one fairly literally and assuming it means she\'s going to either destroy Cersei\'s stronghold or arrive after someone\'s done it for her, though in theory the Iron Throne could stand for the whole of Westeros. STATUS: Unproven

• In the books – but not the show – another element of Dany\'s House Of The Undying vision was her brother Rhaegar insisting that "the dragon has three heads". If she\'s one, who are the others? Most people\'s money is on Jon and Tyrion. She also has a vision of a blue winter rose (the flower given to Lyanna Stark by Rhaegar Targaryen) growing in a wall of ice. Jon, presumably.) STATUS: Not really a prediction, as such

• Daenerys also met Quaithe in Qarth. Who? Quaithe! You know Quaithe, Quaithe of the Shadow. 

Oh yes, her. Quaithe, who always wore a mask, didn\'t play a big role in the TV series, but in the books she warns Daenerys that "To go north, you must go south. To reach the west, you must go east. To go forward you must go back, and to touch the light you must pass beneath the shadow". Well, she\'s gone south (to the slave cities) before going north, but the whole going east bit seems to have been forgotten, as has the passing-beneath-the-shadow part, which Dany read as being a reference to the distant city of Asshai. Let\'s forget she mentioned it. STATUS: Not important

, Quaithe turns up again, saying, "Soon comes the pale mare, and after her the others. Kraken and dark flame, lion and griffin, the sun\'s son and the mummer\'s dragon. Trust none of them. Remember the Undying. Beware the perfumed seneschal."

The "pale mare" is a cholera-like epidemic that shows up in city of Astapor in the books. The kraken is surely one of the Greyjoys – Theon and Yara have met Dany in the show but not the books (yet), where Victarion, another of Balon\'s brothers, is on his way to meet her. He\'s replaced by Euron, a different brother, in the show. Keeping up? The dark flame is a Red Priest with dark skin called Moqorro, the "lion" is presumably Tyrion, the "griffin" is a character called Jon Connington who\'s also not in the show, the "sun\'s son" is Quentyn Martell (see above) and the "mummer\'s dragon" is a kid who Connington wants to pass off – honestly or otherwise – as the baby Aegon Targaryen, now grown up and not killed by The Mountain after all. Basically, as none of this stuff has made it into the show, it\'s safe to ignore the lot of it.

Though "the perfumed seneschal" could easily be her trusted advisor Varys. Ooh! STATUS: Not important except for the book fans

• The Red Priest who hangs out with the undead Beric Dondarrion and now The Hound, reported that, "According to prophecy, our champion will be reborn to wake dragons from stone and reforge the great sword lightbringer that defeated the darkness those thousands of years ago." This is the Azor Ahai myth that the Red Faith are terribly excited about: a belief in a returning messiah. Thoros would appear to be describing Daenerys, given the bit about the dragons, but the stuff about the sword is a bit more difficult as the prophecy requires the sacrifice of a loving wife\'s heart, and Dany hasn\'t got a wife. Not beyond the bounds of possibility, though: Yara Greyjoy would fit the bill. STATUS: Unproven

Just to be clear, Maggy was not an actual frog. She was a woman who lived in the woods, like they tend to in fairytales, and who told Cersei her future. The showrunners made a point of showing this scene in flashback, something they hardly ever do, so it\'s clearly important.

• Cersei asked if she\'d marry the prince (meaning Rhaegar, who she was unofficially promised to). Maggy said no, but she\'d marry the king. 100% verified, and 100% not what she thought Maggy meant: she married King Robert instead after he killed Rhaegar. STATUS: True

• She asked if she\'d be queen one day. Yes, said Maggy – but she\'d be cast down by a younger, more beautiful queen. Cersei thought that meant Margaery. We think that means Daenerys. STATUS: Unproven

•She asked if she and the king would have children. Maggy said the king would have 20, but that she would have only three. (Robert had loads of bastards while Cersei bore only Joffrey, Myrcella and Tommen.) "Gold shall be their crowns and gold their shrouds," said Maggy. Joffrey and Tommen were both kings, and both died. Myrcella wasn\'t crowned, but she did have blonde hair, and she died too. STATUS: True

• In the books but not the show, Maggy made one more prophecy: [SPOILERRRRRRR!] "W

hen your tears have drowned you, the valonqar shall wrap his hands about your pale white throat and choke the life from you.

" "Valonqar" is High Valyrian for "little brother", which Cersei took to mean Tyrion, forgetting that she has another brother, a few seconds younger than her… Mind you, he\'s only got one hand left, so that might be problematic. STATUS: Highly likely, we\'d say, even if it\'s practically difficult
