Behind the Scenes With Natalie Portman for the New Rouge Dior Campaign
The actress-film director dishes on her favorite lipstick memory (hint: it involves \'Star Wars\') and the best beauty tip she\'s received so far.
Natalie Portman is making powerful statements behind and in front of the camera as of late, as both a newly minted director (
), and the face of Dior's new Rouge Dior campaign, launching Sept. 1 on Dior.com. Ahead of the launch, a making-of video offers a glimpse into the Gordon von Steiner-directed film for the newly reimagined lip collection, which was shot in the streets of Paris.
Portman’s bold red pout takes center stage in the film and print campaign for one of the 50 new Rouge Dior shades re-envisioned by creative and image director of Dior Makeup Peter Philips, who is captured painting the color on the actress' lips in the behind-the-scenes video as James Brown's "I Feel Good" plays in the background.
The revamped collection includes 35 luxe satin and 15 long-wearing matte formulations in five categories of shades, including "Iconic Reds," "Splendid Corals," "Natural Nudes," "Stunning Pinks" and the street-style and celebrity-inspired "Extreme Mattes." Now available in a pure matte finish, #999 is the modern-day version of Christian Dior’s original, iconic #9 shade, which took color-saturated cues from the designer's red couture dresses.
"I’ve been working with Peter [Philips] for years, and it’s so great to have him on board at Dior reinventing classic Dior lipstick shades," says Portman in an interview provided exclusively to
Here, Portman opens up about everything from her favorite makeup memories to her extensive lipstick collection — and what to do when someone has lipstick on their teeth.
Moisturizer. I always make sure to moisturize my skin, in addition to using lip salve — especially on days when I am not in full makeup for work reasons.
The first time I probably wore makeup was when I was shooting
. The makeup artist used all natural things — like beet juice mixed with rosewater for my lips and cheeks, because she didn’t want to put makeup on a kid.
What is the best makeup tip you learned from a makeup artist?
Using lipstick as a blush – it’s a great trick when you want a different color and fresh shine on your cheeks.
, when they made the Kabuki lip on me, I understood the aesthetic they were going for with the entire character from that lip.
What would you do if you realized someone had lipstick on their teeth?
I would point it out to them quietly — women should always be looking out for each other.
Which stars in the past do you think had the most dazzling lips?
Audrey Hepburn, Catherine Deneuve, Sophia Loren.
Any personal beauty tips that you can share with us?
When I'm not working, I like to keep things simple and less-is-more. I use minimal coverage, apply a primer, and try to wear more neutral tones, because I want to allow my skin to breathe when it can. I also use sunscreen every day--and the Dior Bronze one smells amazing. Ultimately, the best beauty routine is a good night’s sleep and plenty of water. Rested, hydrated skin always looks best.
Running is a great form of cardio and gives me time to clear my head. I balance that with gyrotonics, which allows me to increase my core strength, stretch my muscles, and tone every part of the body. Exercise is especially important when I'm working on a film set, because it gives me energy to work long hours and relieves stress.
What are your favorite Paris/NYC/L.A. fitness hotspots?
I love Rituel in Paris for gyrotonics and running in Luxembourg Gardens. In L.A. I like to hike anywhere in nature!
You are the face of both Miss Dior and Rouge Dior. As Miss Dior, what do you think would be her favorite shade?
The 047 Miss — a pretty pink which was actually inspired by the fragrance — a "perfume that smells of love."
What is your most memorable moment working with Dior?
I think when we filmed at the Hotel du Cap for the Miss Dior campaign — it was so luxurious and incredible. It felt like the golden days of movie making to have something so lavish.
What is your favorite Rouge Dior color? Why?
I love the pinks/nudes, but also love the classic reds of Dior and the matte version of the famous 999.
Too many to count! You can never have too many options.
