I think that I'd rather accept the harsher reality because at least then I know that when you hit rock bottom there's no way but up. At least then I'd actually have a choice whether I'd stay at rock bottom or try to climb my way out.

With a false reality you could be the richest thing on the planet, but the moment the curtains open and the rug is yanked from under your feet it's pretty much a done deal. Finding out that everything you thought you had was fake and that your dreams were just dreams from all of that success down to the people you became acquainted with and the illusion of a impeccably stable foundation would definitely be to much for a lot of people. Waking from that would be would crushing, especially waking into a severely less successful version of what you thought was reality.
