"w-w-what the heck happened while I was g-gone...." Yoon muttered through bloodshot eyes. She knew hospitals took care of patients, but never before she thought it could to this degree. She shuffled uncomfortably on her bed, thinking to herself where she was going to get the money to pay this since her family didn't necessarily have insurance. She figured she would give them some false information before escaping whenever she got the chance to. In the meantime, Yoon laid back down on her reclined bed, her bandaged arms moving stiffly to type in numbers into the phone for what seemed the 100th time. Her mother wasn't answering, and she knew she wasn't the type to answer if she didn't recognize the phone number. However, in her next attempt, she gasped when the familiar voice picked up instead of sending her to voicemail.
"Hahlloo?! Who this, call too much!" Yoon's mother spoke into the phone.
Yoon sighed of relief when she recognized her mother was okay. "M-M-Mom, i-it's me, Y-Yoon--"
"--YOONIE!?"
The young woman cringed at the yelling that came afterwards. She sighed, being forced to listen to her mother's accusations and lectures. She spent a good three minutes silent, simply letting her mother scream at her for her disappearance. But she was relieved to know that her brother was okay too. Yoon wasn't sure how to explain what happened to the woman that brought her into this world and nursed her. She didn't want to put her through anything she herself had witnessed so far. Yoon refused to tell her the truth for her safety, and instead said a lie that she knew would only get her mom more angry. But what came afterwards made her heart sink just a little.
"PaRtY?! You at Party?! You skip brother, you skip me--you leave alone--you no care, you just party and care about yourself!!!" She heard her mother yell at her. "I pick up Sangeon from Police Station because you at pArTy?! Sangeon no eat dinner, you no water plants, you no clean room, you no do nothing but party!"
Tears inevitably began to stream down Yoon's face, and she sniffled quietly so that her mother wouldn't hear her. "You scare Sangeon with monsters from movie and now he no want sleep! He lie just like you!" The woman on the other side of the phone yelled at her. "You lie lie lie, just like father and lie no genetic! You already twenty and you no care! you still no care, you act like baby! out partying?!"
"M-Mom, I said I was sorry, I-I'll be home soo--" Her raspy voice was cut off by her mother again.
"No, no--you no come back home! You bad influence on sangeon! Bad bad honor brings! You need be more like Lauren--more responsible, more careful, more organized---she has life! She works and has life! You no do NOTHING but sit and eat! You like cat!"
"Mom--" But it was too late. Yoon's mother had hung up on her. The young Korean woman found her head low between her knees, crying softly to herself. Her hand trembled, and she had to stop herself from launching the phone towards the wall.
